What type of popular music is in Ecuador?

what is the national music of Ecuador?

There are a lot of styles of music which are popular, but some of the most popular are merengue and reggaeton, neither which have their roots in Ecuador. Merengue comes from the Dominican Republic whereas reggaeton traces its origins to Panama.

Regardless, both are very popular and can be heard frequently in bars and discotheques throughout the country.

This isn't to say that other types of music aren't heard; salsa, bachata, cumbia, and ranchero are also quite common, just as is techno, latin pop, and good old fashioned american rock-n-roll.

You are asking two questions, neither has a definitive answer since it both depends on the region and demographics. Traditional music could be music from the Andes, or early twenty century rythms (pasillos, San Juanitos, vals, cumbias), or afro-ecuadorean rythms, or even the pervasive tecno-cumbia.

Most in Ecuador would agree that the all-time favorite national musician is Julio Jaramillo (long deceased), but his music does not necesarily represent the current state of music tastes, nor the range of sounds available during his time or any other time.

The popular cultural music is called Andina. It has lots of guitar and flute. Here's one example.
