Most of latin American countries were "conquered" by either spaniards or portuguese, both embracing the Catholic church. Therefore, when the conquistadores arrived, they taught the Catholic religion as the one and only. It has remained strong since colonial times, and latin american countries respect catholic festivities throughout the year.
However, the evangelical church has gained more adepts in latin America and it is becoming a stronger church due ti its community service to the poor and needy.
Nevertheless, the church has always been the source of community service in Latin America and the poor people may be skeptical of the government but not of the church.

The Catholic Church is still the big powerhouse in Colombia and most of Latin America. I think the Church still has a lot more influence there than it does in the US. You still see manger scenes, stars at Christmas, Its the night of the Christ Child, not the 25th, You have the 3 reyes magos, Most in latin american believe in God, heaven and hell. I think that the role has been to keep a larger degree of morality - in some senses - in the countries than we now enjoy in the US.

Still a big influence in the latin countrys. Not so much in U.S. anymore.
