What would be a good gift for a 14 year old girl from Guatemala?

I am sponsoring a 14 year old Guatemalan girl through a charity. I would like to send her a Christmas gift and birthday gift very soon. Does anyone have any ideas?

I live in Guatemala so I think the first thing you should do, as you were suggested earlier, is to find out the place where this girl lives. Finding out if she uses traditional custom is very important as well. If she uses traditional clothes, she wont be wearing any "occidental" clothing at all, except for sweaters or jackets.
I think a great gift for this girl is a radio (battery operated). Most indigenous people in Guatemala dont have access to a TV, so the radio is very important for their entertainment. A small, portable radio could bring her a lot of happiness and it will be preserved by this girl for a long time.
By the way, the mail system in Guatemala is very good now at days, and also you can use UPS, Fedex or DHL courier systems.

Guatemala is famous for its colorful native clothing.
The Shaw (triangle sweater) is one of its trademarks among the lating countries. leather sandals and earings orl backpacks! Another cool idea would be a hamak for any teeagers room or patio!

CLOTHES AND SHOES

I would first find out what city she lives in. I just returned from 6 months in Quetzaltenango and its cold all year round. I would be wearing a jacket in July where it is around 65F when the east coast around Livingston and Rio Dulce was Baking at around 100F. Shoes as the others have said are always needed although sizes can be tricky (they use the same sizing system there as in the US). Clothes, warm or cold depending on the area are also tricky - is she mayan/indigenous? If so, she will only wear traditional dress... I would reccomend school supplies, paper and fun sparkly markers etc. Feel free to ask me any other more specific questions.

Depends on how much you want to spend.

On the practical side, clothing and shoes. Inquire as to the weather and what is appropriate there. Maybe healthy foods, if that is possible, like treats, snacks (like what you give people in gift baskets).

On the mental development side, well... Art supplies. Can she read or write or does she have someone that can teach her? Definitely books, journal/paper, pens, pencils, etc.

send her some clothes and some shoes, trust me those really come in handy. some jeans or shirts that she could use to go to school or when she's with friends. But clothing is the best way to go....I've seen how much of a difference it is for people in Guatemala to have new clothes...you'll help her out more than what you already are.
