You can take a bus to Tapuchula MX (that is the border with Guatemala) from there you can take another bus to Quetzaltenango in Guatemala. There you can stay in Xela it is a little beautiful city with lots of things to do. There you meet and run will a lot of US citizens and Europeans. From Xela you can take charters to other places in Guatemala.

Friendly advice don't carry lots of cash, don't show your money in the street. Hide your camera always carry a copy of your passport with you, leave the original in the hotel. Always hide your camera, be careful when you walk in the markets (lots of pick pocketing. )

I'm from Guatemala.

SINCE you are already taking a bus to Tijuana (as opposed to driving), the easiest way (besides driving) is to keep on going by bus. (Apparently flying is not an option? otherwise you would have mentioned flying to Guatemala instead of bussing it to Tijuana.) You also mention the cheapest way.

Definitely by bus. Its very cheap but I would suggest a first class one and try to do most of the traveling during the day.
If you stop in a San Cristobal or Oaxaca Mexico check out the travel agencies. They have cheap semi private van services that will make it easier for you to cross the border and directly to where you want to go in Guate. In Guatemala use Linea Dorada or Alamo for long distance and local travel agencies for 1 or 2 hour trips . Its cheap.

Only take the chicken buses during the day and for short rides. They get robbed the most at night since they don't have security.

WOAH...haha, tijuana is on the peninsula right? baja
idk if there are even buses from tijuana to here, but if there are, ur going to have to come from tijuana out to the states again, and then take another bus to monterrey, mexico.
and then from there take a bus to guatemala.
but, i've been to tikal 3 times before (twice on a plane, and once on a bus as a road trip for me and my friends) the bus ride was bout 12 hours, and it was pretty much torture, and if ur alone...that's gonna be more torturing. so...if ur willing to be "tortured" take the bus, if ur NOT willing to, take a plane. and take taca, interjet, aeromexicana..
idk about the airliners, but i wuld definately take a plane, cuz bus fees arent that cheap especially if ur going outta borders, and the torture is not worth it hahaha... TRUST ME. or if there are boats (FIRST CLASS< OR CERTIFIED ONLY) it would be pretty quick too.. maybe tijuana to puerto san jose.

and, i really recommend u do not take chicken buses...people say guatemala's okay, but a native of this country, u definately dont wanna take chances..over here, the maras (gangs) will rape u even if u are a male and then shoot u in the head..) and chx buses are notorious for getting hijacked my salvatruchas and 18's....and trust me, if u are not of guatemalan decent u do NOT wanna take this chacne. guatemala is the 7th country with the most homicide rates. and they go for tourists.
