Guatemala is beautiful! I am 16 and I spent the 08 summer there (2 months) I stayed in Antigua, which is where tourism is. There is a great center which restaurants and the tourist centers. The weather is great, cool temperature. And what attracted me to your question was Pacaya. Volcan Pacaya is absolutley one of the most break taking places you will visit in Guatemala. You take a cab up to the base of the volcano, you get with a group and you hike up the mountain then you will get to this place with all of the rock and you hike that for about a quarter of a mile and you will actually see lava! You can pretty much get as close as you want to, to it! I was so shocked, absolutley breath taking. To Tikal we had to take a 2 hour flight, but that was great, clean, and safe. I'm not to sure about buying Jada. But yes you can camp at El Remate, I would just camp with other people, if you decide to do that. Also, if your interested in learning Spanish there a lot of Spanish schools there.
Oh and one safety tip: DO NOT take the public buses that are recycled school buses, there is crime on them and the drivers are very unsafe. My dad and I got on one and the driver speed up very fast on purpose and my dad knocked his head into the bar and it starting bleediing, and the bus driver laughed. SO DO NOT TAKE THOSE FOR YOU OWN SAFETY. Also, if your flying into Guatemala City be careful, it isn't that safe, take a licensed cab to your destination.
Overall, Guatemala was the most amazing country that I have visited, most places and very safe especially Antiuga because they have their own tourist police. You can volunteer, there is so many wonderful, educational, and fun things to do there! Have funn! |

I absolutely adore Antigua. It is beautiful to just walk around there and look at all the architecture. There is some great shopping there as well.
Haven't been to the rest of the places you mentioned that you are going to visit.
Enjoy your trip! I absolutely loved the country and can NOT wait to go back. |

Francis Ford Coppola has a beautiful eco friendly hotel in the shores of the lake Peten Itza in Tikal, you should visit it. |

Yes it's beautiful and the people are very nice. Be prepared that you will be a tourist and if you are white and have any color of hair that is not black, you will stand out. Be very wary especially if going to guatemala city because it is dangerous. Of course you will be a target wherever you go but if you are careful, like most you will have no problems on your visit. Don't drink the water. Don't get ice in your drinks (drink from the bottle it comes in). Use bugspray with DEET if going to the more tropical areas. The food from street vendors is good - VERY good! Be forwarned though that you may get worms or parasites from them. Yes I ate streetfood and it was amazing and cheap., Yes LOL I got worms several times in four months among other things. Maybe I have a weak stomach...Be careful about taking fotos of children or people without permission. It's kinda rude and sometimes you might want to offer up a Q (Quetzal) for their kindness.
Have some Paches while you are there if you can. If you plan to visit quetzaltenango, there is an outdoor/indoor market and often there are old ladies selling the for 5Q. The potato is good but the rice kind is amazing. Be respectful of the people, even when haggling for prices. I think you will have fun. I lived there for four months last year and it was great if it werent for the stomach ailments. |
