Hondu
I live on Roatan, the Honduras Bay Islands, about thirty miles from La Ceiba. La Ceiba and the islands have everything you are looking for plus. But, if you want to come here to work on Felix damage repair you are wasting your time. There is no damage.

So, you want jazz and stuff as part of the package. Then, Sao Paulo. Not that jazzy though, but way better out of the places you mention. The beach is not that close by, however the town, its environs and its people are rewarding.

Honduras got clobbered by Felix. I bet the Bay Islands / La Ceiba Honduras could use a hand rebuilding.

Personally I'm a great fan of Guatemala, and of Antigua in particular. I think Guatemala has it all...the mountains, the beach (Pacific coast in particular), and obviously the rain forest with all the Mayan ruins to explore. Lake Atitlan is totally colourful and fascinating, and if you ended up there you could do your "sef peace corps" thing helping the little hospital in Santiago Atitlan get on it's feet again after the mudslide took it out a couple of years ago. Contact Pueblo a Pueblo there if that appeals to you. Hope you find somewhere you really like. If you want to learn some spanish while you're there I would recommend Don Pedro de Alvarado Spanish School in Antigua, Guatemala.
