I lived in Central America for a year in 2000. I've been back a few times since then to Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. The strange thing is that considering how close Central America is to the US, the airline prices are usually fairly steep.
It's always a good idea to try Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Cheaptickets.com, etc, but I would also check the websites of the actual carriers to see if they have any specials to that location.
There are several US airlines that fly to Guatemala City: two Central American carrier and one Mexican carrier. These are LACSA (which is part of TACA), Copa (Compania Panamenia, which is operated by Continental)and Mexicana.
I usually fly LACSA/TACA to Central America because it is the cheapest from California (where I live), but the prices may differ from other parts of the US. Anyways, I've found LACSA/TACA to be safe, reliable and affordable. Oh, and they are one of the few that offers non-stop flights (from California). |

Be careful with the super cheap flights - they're often from the Central American countries' national airlines, and can be unreliable and not so safe. I had a friend who got a cheap flight to Peru through one of those airlines, and they canceled the second leg of his flight and left him stranded in Costa Rica for 2 weeks!
Try hotwire.com or expedia.com to get good flights. They'll help you save on the price without getting a risky airline. |
