When backpacking South America what is the best way to get from country to country? |
Backpacking from city to city, country to country in South America is inevitable and I need to get from place to place in the safest, cheapest, and most efficient way possible. I know that each country and each city is different but if you could give me specifics concerning transportation for any country you know, or any general transportation for South America, please share your valued knowledge :) |

Definitely buses and coaches.
When I travelled around South America, I took long distance coaches everywhere. They are the cheapest way to get around and most (apart from Boliva) where very comfortable and spacious.
You can book tickets at any coach station - just turn up on the day or a few days before.
Train travel is not wise, but check internal flights also as some are the same price as the coaches. |

I would find out where you can travel by train.
Then the distance from city to city after that.
Youll want to have a rough idea of exactly where you plan to go in which order.
To simplify it.
Or you can simply wander and hitchhike till you find something interesting... Then move on.
I would reccomend Trains tho, They are the safest way to travel im sure.
And then from city to city..
Depending on your funds, Maybe rent a vespa. That was you dont rely on others
(You dont want to wake up with only one kidney)

Bus! Big first class bus for long trips and vans for short trips. |

I posted on your other question but I forgot another thing, collectivos! They really are something awful but I never had anything wrong happen with them. :) They made it seem like I was having a more "authentic" experience. They are very cheap. Basically, they are large vans that go from small city to city that sometimes you can't get to by bus. They through your stuff on top of the van and shove 15-20 of you into a van made for maybe 10 people. They really make for great stories when you get back home. They are usually only used by locals and maybe the occasional barebones backpacker. |
