When is the best time of the year to travel to Peru? What is it like there in January or February?

Same thing as everybody... If you are going for the 1st time you MUST go to Cuzco and january and february is a mess (rainy season) july and august is too expensive.
I'll go april- may when the coast is still warm (you can surf if you are into it), the mountains (where Cuzco and Machu Picchu is) just came out of their rainy season and have great fruit and vegetables and the rain forest is perfect to go too. If you are in a rush go october will do too.

Best time it´s may / june...
In janueary and february you are going to have excellent weather in the coast (it´s summer time) but it´s rainy season in the highlands, so Machu Picchu, Cusco are a mess.
Tourist season is july and august, so try to choose any other dates. May for me was the best because it was still warm in the coast and no rains in the highlands!

we like sept and october
not to busy.. and minimal rain..

Hi,

I've been living in Urubamba since December 2004.

It's not a mess in the wet season!

The best time for the Cusco region is towards the end of the wet season in March/April when everything is at its most verdant and colourful. Please visit the following page on my web site for more details.
http://www.machawasi.com/English/Climate.html

If you are wanting to do the Inka trail then it is usually closed during February for maintenance and clean ups.

To secure the most convenient Train Services between Cusco and Machu Picchu then you should make your reservations as early as possible. Even in the low season it sometimes can be difficult to get seats on the most convenient services if you attempt to make your reservations less than 1 or 2 months in advance.

You should organise your schedule around the most convenient times for travelling and then make your accommodation arrangements after your transport reservations have been confirmed and paid for.

hola!
yes, the best time is september and october. You can find a good climate in the coast, jungle and highlands. Its truth that july and august is better but the prices in transport and hotels are more expensive cause here is holidays and free days for the family and all is busy in that time. september will give you the opportunity to find all with a good price and not a lot of people in the places you visit. Hope you visit us!!
