With that budget and your interest in checking out the Costa Rica culture and the natural paradise this place is, I would recommend you the following:

fly into San Jose(Juan Santamaria Airport) from there stay the first night in downtown San Jose, go to the National theater, get some local food at "Cheyes" a small local restaurant in the middle of San Jose, ask a local they can show you the way. I would go visit the Gold museum in the Plaza de la Cultura. at night, depending on the day ask what is the best bar or hangout place and enjoy your first night in the country!.

day two I would catch a bus or arrange some shuttle transfer(around $30 - $60) to the Arenal Volcano, a beautiful place, get in a decent hotel (Arenal Springs, around $75/night double bedroom) then a cool volcano hike tour that ends up in a hot springs and some dinner.

The next day what about a Canopy Tour(Zip Lines) over the cloudforest, and relax on the hotel pool.

Next day take a shuttle transfer to the Manuel Antonio Beach, and an ATV tour! you should stay at a hotel like the Costa Verde, the nightlife in Manuel Antonio is pretty awesome!.

Day 5 I would just chill at the beach and enjoy some "ceviche" on a local restaurant.

Day 6 a shuttle transfer to San Jose and stay at a hotel like the Sleep Inn. maybe a night city tour.

Day 7, transfer to the Hotel and leaving beautiful Costa Rica

If you need any help setting up a package like that one, just google My Costa Rica, experts in Costa Rica, and don't charge anything since we work on commission with the hotels and tours.

Been living here for three years..
You should land in Liberia, check out the tourist stuff on the North Pacific coast..Tamarindo, Playas Del Coco Falmingo etc. Definitely take a boat tour along the Papagayo, with great sport fishing in Coco.
Then go to Volcano Arenal, Arenal lodge is a public park where you can walk up to the volcano. There are daily tours to Arenal everywhere but i would recommend renting a car and driving there..Its a beautiful drive through Tilaran. A car is about $300 a week. Zip lines in Monteverde are among the best but there are many zip lines and rafting tours around.
Have fun!

I really liked Puerto Jiminez.. the wildlife was amazing and the beaches and nature were beautiful. Not much in the way of entertainment though. I guess nature was entertaining enough. I heard the Atlantic side was cheaper but I have never been. San Jose has this area where there are clubs and food but I don't remember what it was called.
I have also been to Tamarindo on the North Pacific side. It is more of a surfer town so there is not as much wildlife.
Have a GREAT time!
