Where's the best place for a Spanish immersion?

I want to travel to a Spanish-speaking country this summer to improve my Spanish. Which place do you think would be best? I was leaning toward Peru or Argentina, but now I'm thinking Chile or Mexico. There are so many options! What do you think? (Not Spain though.)

The ANdean countires speak a version of spanish that mos tnorthamericans find clearer than almost everyplace else. They have lost fewer sounds and enunciate with less slurring generally. Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia all have high altitude cities where the language is spoken clearly, at least as far as Northamericans are concerned.

In my opinion it really just depends wherever you feel like going, or if you want to learn a particular dialect. I mean, they are all Spanish speaking countries, so as long as you don't stay in a completely tourist-ified city where everyone knows English, I think you will definitely get good practice wherever you go :)

The small city of Cuernavaca, Mexico, specializes in Spanish language courses complete with homestays. It's about an hour from Mexico City.

I've done a homestay in Normandy, France, and there's no better or faster way to learn a language!

There are lots of programs, so you'll find one that is right for you. (And don't listen to the paranoid people -- nearly all of Latin America is safe as long as you have common sense!)

It's getting to the point that most travel in Mexico is extremely dangerous for foreigners. The Mexican military are having to take over cities due to corruption in the law enforcement agencies. I'd do a lot of research on any place if I were you. You want a safe trip and I assume to return home afterwards.

Well I think that Colombia is a very good place, because as far as i know is one of the few countries in Latin America where the spanish don't have any accent, it is more natural.

Wonderboy
In colombia we speak Spanish as close to the original language, more than other country. The Spanish actually speak the worst Spanish out of all the countries that are Spanish speaker. Mexico use a lot of slang in their everyday language as well. If you did not like the idea of Colombia, Peru or Chile are the next 2 I would recommend.

Mariana C
i will suggest Colombia.. because they have the best Spanish, they don't have accent, and they don't used have a lot of slags.. if you go to Medellin, Cali or other cities in Colombia you will find more slags and different accent...
