Jaco is a no no
Tamarindo yes!
If you want a nightlife its between Jaco and Tamarindo. Jaco has been developed before Tamarindo, so therefore, I think the drug and prostitution is more in your face. Tamarindo is also pretty much developing but still its not as bad. And Tamarindo has some cool neighbouring beaches, that you can go and visit, playa Grande, playa Langosta, Playa conchal and playa avellanas.
If I were you i work stay in Tamarindo, and then drive to those beaches. |

Puerto Viejo (de Limón) on the Carib coast. It's got clubs, bars, and all sorts of specials. Some of the best atmosphere and most exotic food I had during the trip.
Jacó is fine, not great. Went there two or three times during my stay. |
