I have to agree with Argentina being nicer. I live and work in Chile, I have lived one year in Valpo, 2 in Viña and am now located in Santiago. The rub is, I'm a gringo and the Chilean are very xenophobic (not racist but definitely not overtly friendly to outsiders). The best places are in the south of Chile. If you go to Frutillar and Valdivia, then the attitude changes some what. The main problem with Santiago is the pollution. It was and maybe still is, the 5th most polluted city in the world. Now that I live here it is bearable, but I used to get headaches when we came here for shopping. Valpo has the workers that travel to Viña ( a city that shares the bay), so they are generally lower class and more hostile to outsiders. Living in Viña, all my Chilean friends worked in Valpo, which has the buisiness district and were more affluent and tolerant (daresay educated) about foreigners. These are of course, generalizations and I have met good and bad people everywhere, but after this many years I am entitled to them. I should mention that Chilean distrust of Americans is a little founded, we admitted in 2001 that we were responsible for the overthrow of their democratically elected president (allende) and helped fund Pinochet's revolt. I was actually spit at in a square by someone who claimed it was my fault his brother was missing.
In Argentina they were used to a higher standard of living despite their current economic problems so they are a little more open and friendly. Besides they have hundreds of years of architecture and art that is amazing to be around and the cities are beautiful especially BA, Mendoza, and St. Louis. Btw, Chile does have its architecture but earthquake after earthquake has effectively destroyed the grandness of the skyline. Can't even compare the two countries on that respect.
One last thing, Argentina is economically very weak right now while Chile has the srongest South American economy. The dollar goes so much farther in Arg. Nevermind the culinary tradition and choices of places to stay and go are almost endless in Arg. |

I have traveled to both, in my opinion, Argentina was much nicer
No offense meant to chileans. Chile was very nice.
My reasons:
Argentinian Spanish was much easier to understand.
Food was better and more affordable
Travel was much easier, and there was a larger variety of places to go.
Wine was better, and cheaper.
Warmer? Depends on where you are.....
if you wanna be real warm, go to the atacama desert in Northern Chile
Almost everything (besides the coastline and far inland) north of Santiago is desert.
Northern Argentina is more rain forest. Very temperate. South Of Buenos Aires is Argentinian Patagonia....Not too much there, just alot of plains ( besides of course near the Andes and extremely south by tierra Del fugeo.
Favorite Place in Chile: Valpraiso
Favorite Place in Argentina: Mendoza |

Hey, they're big countries. Are you talking about Mendoza or B.A., Santiago or Chiloe? What are you going to be doing there? Studying, working as a missionary, selling lingerie? Good luck. |

I Go Buenos Aires
|
Argentina seems to be more diverse, with more access to other travels (if you are in Buenos Aires). You can go to the beach (in Uruguay, very nearby), the river (Tigre), a Tango show, eat great steak, drink wine, walk cobblestone streets or posh neighborhoods, see concerts in the streets, sit in huge parks that rival Paris, go to an ecological reserve not even remembering you are in a city.
Super friendly people, and pretty much anything you could ever want to do. |
