Their former dictator's palace has been turned into a resort. I don't remember what it's called, but it's supposed to be one of the best places in Central America.

As Rolf said, there is a Holiday Inn hotel in Santa Elena located near San Salvador and the U.S. Embassy. It´s next to "La Gran Vía" mall, where you can find all the fun: department stores, restaurants, international cuisine, music, discotheques, karaokes, it´s safe and not much expensive. After that if you like to go to the beach: Decameron Salinitas hotel in Sonsonate is awesome. It has facilities and services all inclusive, and it isn´t far from San Salvador (about 45 miles). Enjoy El Salvador, eat pupusas!

Just dont forget to eat a lot of PUPUSAS!!! revueltas, con chicharron, frijoles, queso..my favorite are: queso con loroco.
