Safe is a relative term in Guatemala. Anywhere is safer than Guatemala City, but could still be dangerous. Antigua is pretty safe, but robberies are still common. While Antigua is gorgeous, I would agree with the first post and say that Semuc Champey is the place to go. It takes a while to get to, so it limits the number of people there. I would highly recommend Semuc Champey. It would all depend on what you find fun and entertaining too. Monterrico is very nice and relaxing, but mosquitos can be a huge pain. How long are you going to be in Guatemala for? Below are some links.

anything above are good spots, although other not too common places like Playa Dorada, and other places are good too. Guatemala is relatively safe, not at all how it is portrayed on TV and news.

There aren't an overwelming number of resorts in Guatemala. Most toursist set up base in Antigua, and then make small trips out from there. It is a very touristy town, with lots to offer, and you can stay in a smaller inn or hotel and totally avoid the Resort feal.

Antigua Guatemala, this city is full of options, and from here you can go to anothers places, like atitlan, the pacific coast, guatemala city.
If you want to know about the mayan, you have to go to Tikal, this mayan city is about half hour in a fly from Guatemala city.

Semuc Champey. Beautiful!! Lots of little bungalow type places to stay at very vey near the park. Do not stay at Las Marias. A bungalow closer and much nicer. And don't stay in Lanquin. Not walkable. Otherwise the city of Antigua is very nice and Rio Dulce has some nice places like Tortugal. Also Rio Dulce is near Finca Paraiso. Hot waterfall. All can be found on the internet and all beautiful places. Have fun!

TIKAL is the best: Mayan ruins
ANTIGUA: Nice restaurants, Hotels coffee plantations and eco tours.
AWESOME COUNTRY
