Where is the best and the safest Central/South American countries to visit for a week or two?

For Central America I would suggest Costa Rica and for South America I would suggest Chile.

You are a man. The place you want to go is Fortaleza, Brazil. You absolutely want to go by yourself (leave your "friend" at home). This part of Brazil is perfectly safe (warning....many other parts of Brazil are definitely not safe). The thing to understand about Brazil is that the women here are sexually aggressive and love americans. By love americans, I, of course, mean that you will be mauled by hot, young, lucious chicks, everywhere you go, who want to be your girlfriend. If you are going to South America for winter break, you absolutely want to do it here. The hottest chicks in Brazil live in Fortaleza. And winter break is definitely when you want to go (ie it's not the traditional tourist season). Bring condoms and lots of them.

hi. i lived in costa rica for ten years and nicaragua for one, have spent a fair amount of time in all CA countries (except panama), and i'd have to say that costa rica is the safest. nothing bad has ever befallen me anywhere; i say C.R. for two reasons: 1) what i've heard and 2) the fact that C.R. is much wealthier than the others.

but i recommend nicaragua. hands down. the people are warmer it's knock-out beautiful - full of volcanoes and lakes - and cheapisimo. if you do go to nica, skip managua - it's a dump. there are two smallish cities that i recommend: Granada and Matagalpas, both very safe and laid back.

in SA i only know venezuela. caracas, the capital, is a world-class city but has high crime. at night, in any city, indoors is recommendable.

you might consider visiting Colombia which is in the north part of South America, and Argentina (really cheap these days)
