Safe doesn't always mean fun and it depends on your interests. My top pics are:

Argentina - So much to see, really friendly people, great shopping and as long as you stay out of dark alleys in major cities (like any country) at night you will be fine.
Argentina is my pick by the time you weigh up things to see and do with safety. You can go to so many great towns and cities:
- Buenos Aires (you can spend all your time here!)
- Salta
- Mendoza
- Cordoba
- Bariloche
- Ushuaia

Uruguay - Small and has some great beach areas. You can combine this with going to Argentina as it is only a short ferry trip to Colonia from Buenos Aires.

Chile - If you enjoy the outdoors head south from Santiago as there is not much to see or do there.
Stop in Pucon for beautiful rivers and snow-capped volcanos, adventure sports galore and a chilled out town.

As you head further south there are more rafting opportunities and you can even cross the boarder into Bariloche, Argentina (one of my favourite places!) by crossing the lakes in a boat. Stunning scenery.

Then from Puerto Montt you can take a 3 day freight ship cruise thru the fjords to Puerto Natales. You cannot imagine how beautiful the views are!

Once in Puerto Natales you can do some hiking in Parqe Nacional Torres del Paine. The 'w' trek will take you 3-5 days.

I am chilean and I have lived in Bolivia and Peru, I know how americans live because I come back from the US last week and i spend 3 months there so if you like everyting clean confortable and safe you can choose Chile which it´s in my opinion bettere in safe than others countrys in southamerica.Bolivia it´s pretty and very interesting but it´s not safe, the water it´s not clean and there are always strikes and bloking in the roads. more than unsafe it´s unconfortable if you doesn´t lke to be in places like that.

Hi. It's safe throughout if you take the usual precautions, like not flaunting money and sticking to well travelled areas or staying away from unknown streets at night. Every city in LA and SA has areas that are not safe even for the locals. It all depends on what kind of cultural experience you want to try. Certainly Argentina and Chile are very nice, but more like Europe. If you want a closer look at the Native American culture then Mexico, Peru or Guatemala might be best. Hope this helps.

I've traveled a little in Latin America and lived in Mexico. I would have to say that my best experience was in Chile. It's beautiful, clean and I really felt safe. I would also say it's probably one of the most modern Latin American country. It has a very stable economy so crime isn't as bad. I traveled the country and I felt like I was in Europe or the US.

Do you mean in terms of personal safety from crime, disease or both? Chile would rank highest on both criteria. On crime after Chile I would put Uruguay, Bolivia, Costa Rica and Argentina. In terms of health challenges I would put Uruguay, Argentina and Costa Rica after Chile.

l think all countries are pretty safe except for colombia. nothing against colombia but it can be dangerous to travel, specially by bus inside the country. l would recommend you to look for the most fun country instead of the most safe, for example: ecuador! it´s pretty much the same everywhere, you know? just, be careful with your wallet in a bus full of people and you´ll be fine.
