Where should I go in Costa Rica?

I'm a college student traveling to Costa Rica this May, and don't know where to go......I'm looking for a great beach, some nightlife, and a nice town. Mercy Travel co. recommended Samara. Has anyone been there? Has anyone heard of Mercy Travel?
Thanks a lot!! any help would be greatly appreciated!

Samara has a great beach and is a smaller laid back place with a couple of good bars but good surfing and a good language school. I think it depends on your definition of some night life. Montezuma also comes to mind.

Jaco has a bad reputation, but some nightlife. Or travel to the Caribbean coast and visit Puerto Viejo.

Costa Rica Garmin GPS Map - Malpais to Tammarindo

A lot of people are asking about where to go in Costa Rica and what car to rent . This is for those who want an out of the way experience. Not for a lot of tourist. If you need to pack a lot of items into your luggage then this is not the trip for you. If you need hot long showers then skip it.

I highly recommend the route from Tamarindo to Malpais then to San Jose via a ferry. Off the beaten path and the most beautiful part of Costa Rica in my book! The stretch from Tamarindo to Malpais is amazing. Check out "little Hawaii"... just a half hour form Tamarindo and along the route to Malpias. Take a horse ride on Playa Guiones. You can make a couple day trip out of the route from Tamarindo to Malpais...but stay in Malpais for off the beaten path. Check out my video -

Rent a car with a few friends and drive this route. I have been to Costa Rica twice. My second trip was from San Jose to Osa Peninsula. The stretch from Tamarindo to Maplais on the back roads... yes the back roads...is an amazing experience. You can find Sodas (bars) in the middle of nowhere. It is along this stretch that you will see beaches and jungles that have gone untouched by the tourist. You will hear Howler Monkey's and see them too! (you will not hear or see the Howler Monkey's in Jaco)You can surf on some of the most desolate beaches in the world. You can sit back and have a meal in such a zenful place. You can find cabinas to stay at for as low as $10. Just make sure you get a good 4x4 and a Costa Rica Garmin Map.

I just returned from the Osa Peninsula. A beautiful and amazing place. Get a 4x4 with a lot of clearance and power. I do not recommend Daihatsu Terios. I had a Suzuki Vitara. This was the second time I have used this vehicle.

My second to Costa Rica was from San Jose to Jaco to the Osa Peninsula. ( I like the Tamarindo to Malpais trip a lot more). The Suzuki Vitara got stuck once after running it through a river in the Osa Peninsula. The 4x4 transfer case got stuck in neutral. We were able to just move it a few feet with the help of some very nice Costa Rican kids. For the most part it is a very nice cheap vehicle to rent, but if you can, try to upgrade to one more up. We also used a Costa Rica Garmin GPS map to drive through the jungle at night. It was a life saver at times!

No need to camp. You can stay at cabinas for $9 to 35 a night.

Do not speed ...cops are looking for an excuse to receive bribes. Do not pay them unless you were speeding.

So I recommend - Malpais and Osa Peninsula...for those who want a trip of a lifetime and a low cost.

Pura Vida,
Michael
