Where to go for vacation in Costa Rica?

Guanacaste area: if you prefer the sun, nice beaches and hotels.

Monteverde: if you like to relax in the mountain, the forest, do cannopy.

LimĆ³n: for the caribbean culture and beaches, totally different from guanacaste, but nice option.

Arenal: to visit the active volcanoe, hot termal water, arenal lake, waterfalls.

But if you are going for short time, the best choice is to visite the two volcanoes close to San Jose city, IrazĆŗ an Poas volcanoe.

A lot depends on how long you will be here and what types of things you like to do. My suggestion is to see things in Costa Rica that you cannot see in other places. While the beaches are great -- they are not unique to Costa Rica. However, staying overnight near a volcano is not an experience one has in many parts of the world.

If you do want to go for the beaches, Guanacaste is probably your best choice. There are wonderful secluded little places where you can stay that are modern enough to meet your needs, but Tico enough to be an experience. Stay away from the Marriots and the Holiday Inns if you want a really international experience.

Pick up a copy of Frommer's Costa Rica 2006 and read about the different places there. Also, while Costa Rica has a very low cost of living, don't expect to vacation here for cheap. That is very hard these days since many North Americans have discovered this paradise and the Ticos like to make their income off the tourists!

Go to Guanacaste (the Pacific) or Limon (the Caribbean) there are beautiful beaches over there and they are closed to each other, so you can visit several beaches during your trip.

Now the greatest thing about Costa Rica is the small distances between the beach and the mountain, so you can visit both if you like.

But don't forget the Volcanoes, the Poas Volcano has the second biggest crater in the world and the Arenal volcano is active, so it is a great spectacle to see it at night, I'll assure you that it would be the best fireworks you have ever seen.

i just spent a month there and reccomend at least that amount of time. there is so much to see and do, i dont even feel that a month was long enough. my favorites were arenal, nosara for learning to surf, montezuma for shopping and nightlife, puero viejo for kickin back with the rastafarians. have an amazing time!!

Arenal was my favorite place in Costa Rica. Watching the volcano erupt at night was amazing. Plus the hot springs was a new experience. Monteverde and the cloud forest is something else. Make sure you visit the cloud forest later in the day, it feels like they're coming down on you.
