Where would you travel in Guatemala?

I am an American traveling in Guatemala this summer with another woman companion. I am looking for interesting and safe places to visit in Guatemala and nearby areas. We are interested in ruins, good food, market places, and anything that encompasses the native culture.
Additional Details
I have heard that Panajachel, the Lake Atitlan region, Tikal, Chichicastenango, and Antigua are great. I'd love some more specific info. on food, tips, etc. Would also like to know about things to do in Belize.

We spent a week in Antigua, Guatemala in September. You must go there. It is a great Colonial town. There is a great fabric museum on the edge of town that was very interesting. Hotels are good and cheap. There are more than 20 Spanish Language Schools catering to young through old.

You really need to go out to the market in Chichicastenango on Sundays or Thursday and if at all posible go to Tikal to see the Mayan ruins there. We loved everything in the country, except the airport in Guatemala City.

Panajachel is beautiful, and so is the rest of the Lake Atitlan region. Tikal has pyramids. As far as Guatemala city goes, Zona 10 is safe, but it's not the real "Guatemala."

My brother was supposed to go to G .. but there is unrest there for Americans so the trip was cancelled so I would ask .. where are you from and where are you going

♥Enamorada♥
Panajachel for good native culture...Antigua for markets (They've got the greatest stuff)...Anywhere for good food off the streets (but be careful!!! a must try, Tacos mexicanos or "Gringas"... everyone I've met loves them) and for ruins Tikal...or Xichimche (i'm not sure on the spelling).
