Mexico is the country with the most Maya ruins that are easily accessible. Be careful, many ruins are NOT Maya, but have been rebuilt by the later Toltecs, but still have their Maya features in tact (Chichen Itza for one).
START your trip in Merida, Mexico and see many ruins in a couple of days. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are a must.
Palenque is world reknown for its pyramid and tower of 3 stories, unique to Maya architecture.
Bonampak, discovered in 1947 and restored in the 1980's has excellent painted murals, but you need a guide to travel 2 hours into the jungle on a narrow road.
Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras are along the Usumacinta River, and hard to reach, but worth the adventure.
Guatemala has the biggest and best of them all, TIKAL. But this is a challenge to reach it. Maybe with an extra plane flight to Flores, or an extra day travel by bus from the capital city. Outside the capital there is Quirigua, with beautiful stellae (upright sculptures) if you want to see excellent examples of glyphs in stone.
Honduras has Copan. The center of Maya royalty for a century. The heiroglyphic stairway. It is more easily reached by road. Plenty of hotels nearby.
I have been to all these places and MORE. In conclusion, I recommend Mexico for the greater number, accessibility, hotel accomodations, size and restoration quality of all the Ruins. |
