Which Central American country has the best Mayan ruins?

I've been wanting to see Mayan ruins for some time. Which Central American country has the 'must see' Mayan ruins. I'd like to hike to the ruins in the jungle. Is that possible? If so, what are some reputable tour companies? Thanks!!!

Mexico is the country with the most Maya ruins that are easily accessible. Be careful, many ruins are NOT Maya, but have been rebuilt by the later Toltecs, but still have their Maya features in tact (Chichen Itza for one).
START your trip in Merida, Mexico and see many ruins in a couple of days. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are a must.
Palenque is world reknown for its pyramid and tower of 3 stories, unique to Maya architecture.
Bonampak, discovered in 1947 and restored in the 1980's has excellent painted murals, but you need a guide to travel 2 hours into the jungle on a narrow road.
Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras are along the Usumacinta River, and hard to reach, but worth the adventure.

Guatemala has the biggest and best of them all, TIKAL. But this is a challenge to reach it. Maybe with an extra plane flight to Flores, or an extra day travel by bus from the capital city. Outside the capital there is Quirigua, with beautiful stellae (upright sculptures) if you want to see excellent examples of glyphs in stone.

Honduras has Copan. The center of Maya royalty for a century. The heiroglyphic stairway. It is more easily reached by road. Plenty of hotels nearby.

I have been to all these places and MORE. In conclusion, I recommend Mexico for the greater number, accessibility, hotel accomodations, size and restoration quality of all the Ruins.

I can only tell you that there are quite a few in southern Mexico (okay, not CENTRAL America) and Guatemala.

Not sure how far south the accessible ruins are, but that is where I would go.

I have heard Belize has nice ones too, but definately it's Mexico and Guatemala

Definitely Guatemala, it is so beautiful in TIKAL that Francis Ford Coppolla built eco friendly hotel there. I saw Cameron Diaz in the hotel a few years ago.

You can find more info about Tikal here www.visitguatemala.com and some other places where you can hike loke Biotopodel Quetzal in Coban and Guatemala is a hikers paradise.

Forever Yours.
Guatemala for sure.
