Which Costa Rica city should we stay in this summer?

I really want to go to Costa Rica this summer, late June or July for a week or so with a group of friends. There will probably be 4 or 5 of us. I was just wondering what city you would recommend we stay in? We would prefer to be at the beach or at least within walking distance. We are also looking for a place with some activities around it, like zip lines, rafting, snorkeling, all that good stuff. We dont want anything all-inclusive, too expensive for us poor college students. I know its going to be fairly expensive with airfare and all the extra fees for activities and what not.. I have heard that Manuel Antonio is a good place to stay, but I would appreciate any suggestions and advice!

Damn... i hate saying things like this, but Hernan you say Costa Rica is a third world country and insecure? and that Nicaragua is better?......... i bet that explains why we have 100s of nicaraguans cross our border everday right? cause nicaragua is better. your sources are pretty bad, if you did your homework you would know that Costa Rica is one of the few "Second world countries"

Now on subject, Manuel Antonio is a very nice place, but i wouldnt stay there for more than 2 days, there isnt a lot to do there other than visit the national park (which is amazing by the way) there are a lot of very nice small hotels and restaurants there too.
I wouuld personally advice you to visit Arenal since there are a lot of activities to do there, white water rafting, zip linning, atv tours, and see a volcano erupt every few minutes (which you wontsee very often anywhere else in the world), also the hot springs are very relaxing and a nice place to visit.

Enjoy your trip

gator...
ignore that herman ***....
i always have wonder why if they say nicaragua is better
why are there lots of nicaraguans here in costa rica... they are free to take them back to nicaragua... he he he

anywho,
manuel antonio is nice, but quite expensive for my taste
you should go to montezuma,
you'll have everything there
small town with a beach, 2 waterfalls that you can you and swim
and there are lots of friendly people there
a stay can be from $8-9 and up a night
many people go there

you want towns, villages --- look for "cabinas", which are typical, cheaper accommodation. MA is overrated, over-run by tourists and becoming run down.
if you head that way, go further and stop anywhere along the coast, starting at Dominical.

here's a decent map link to CR:
http://www.1-costaricalink.com/costa_rica_images/costa_rica_maps/costarica_ict.gif

two places come to mind: Caribbean side - Pto. Viejo
and Samara on the Pacific side. I've been to both and enjoyed them both. If you pick Samara, check out the third link. worth a day-trip.

pura vida!

Yes Manuel Antonio is just great. It is very nice and the landscape is just cool.

If you want to stay in a nice place also you can try Puerto Viejo. Limón which is not as expensive as Manuel Antonio and enjoy the different amenities there, but it is more Caribbean style.

The summer before my senior year, my spanish class went to Costa Rica and if you find the right areas...oh my goodness, it is gorgeous! We spent 2 weeks there that including traveling around... My best recommendation is to find a travel agent who can hook you up with a travel guide...

San Jose is a good place to fly into and stay for the night.
Make sure to visit the Arenal Volcano... it is gorgeous and you will probably get to see lava as it is still active (not dangerously though) there is a lodge there that is really awesome with an outdoor pool and such and they have breakfast. Monteverde is another great place to go and is near the zip lines. There is a very nice lodge there, also, that has an awesome restaurant/buffet!

I recommend u go to tamarindo... it's my fav beach :) is so beautiful... it's in guanacaste... also go to flamingo and conchal... each beach is like 20mins by car from each other

PANAMA IS BY FAR BETTER THAN COSTA RICA

hernan ñamendi
Costa Rica is a third world country either, with nothing to call attention. Lots of insecurity and drug trafficking. Not a good place to visit.

Nicaragua is better.

to mora, costa rica has a poor development compared with nicaragua. in nicaragua are the most important Industries, we have the highest literacy level in latin america. costa rica has no culture, WE HAVE CULTURE. sorry is most important the culture.
