I know that everybody who has been in Costa Rica will send you to the Pacific area (Guanacaste), however the Caribbean is exquisite too. I'll recommend you to go to Puerto Viejo, Limon.
Puerto Viejo is a small to medium sized Caribbean village on the Atantic coast of Costa Rica, south of Puerto Limon. Famed for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and rich mix of latino, Afro-Caribbean, and Bribri indiginous culture, Puerto Viejo is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination.
The town of Puerto Viejo is rustic and charming. The only paved road is the main highway which runs along the coast from Limon to Manzanillo. The rest of the streets are dirt-paved, lined with hotels, restaurants, shops, and Caribbean style dwellings. Manuel Antonio is the best. The al fresco eating is great, and the street vending. They have their little back-beaches, and it's not very populated. you can get a hotel right on the beach. You just climb over your balcony and run to the shore. it's great. |

of course, best is subjective and it depends on what else you are wanting - touristy or rustic?- I liked the beaches in Nosara, on the pacific side up north in the Guanacaste region. Kind of rustic - no 4-5 star hotels there.
Manual Antonio, the big national park that everyone talks about in Costa Rica, is beautiful, too.
I would avoid Jaco - dirty little town, dirty beaches, but some good surfing... |
