Which area/hotel in Costa Rica is good for beach and a bit of nightlife?

Me and some friends are thinking of going in May for a birthday trip. We really want to stay at a beachfront hotel but also would like to be able to have a bit of fun at night.
Any suggestions?

I would recommend Tamarindo, Jaco and Manuel Antonio in that order--if night life is a priority.

Tamarindo has a lot of night life. Nice swimming/surfing beaches, however its rather dusty. I recommend the best western hotel in Tamarindo, they also have a pool bar and monkey bar and have live bands and parties. The local hang out is also Mambo Bar.
Jaco beach isnt nice, and there are loads of prostitutes and drugs mind u everywhere. Manuel Antonio has a national park, and is beautiful, the views are amazing. On the Carribean side, its way different. Puerto Viejo is rasta fari herb smoking style town.

Try the Hotel Kamuck in Quepos, CR. Its fantastic and real decent prices too along with excellent food, Service, etc.!

I think you can visit it on the Net by putting in "HotelkarmukQueposCostaRica" -
but check it out!

Its only 29 minutes from San Jose by Sansa Air and is directly across from the beach & the Pacific and 5 minutes away from Manuel Antonio Beach & Reserve!

TONS OF NIGHTLIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

PUTS THE REST OF THE CR HOTELS TO SHAME - WITH EXCEPTION OF HOTEL DIRIA AT TAMARINDO BEACH!

Been there twice and enjoyed it both times!

And I will be going there again in June!

Hey, if you go there for spring break you should find that other kid that posted asking for a beach in spring break too!

Yes, I would agree that Tamarindo is your best option, there is partying, relaxed, friendly people, a bit of a nightlife, amazing sunsets on the beach, superb restaurants and hotels for every budget, but without being dangerous and low-life like Jaco. You won't find too much of late night partying in Costa Rica though, the locals sleep early and the surfers go to bed early too, they need to catch the waves early in the morning!

All the beaches in Guanacaste area are beautiful, my favorite is Playa Conchal in Brasilito made of shells, but there isn't partying there... But if you go to Tamarindo you can easily visit the nearby areas, Playa Grande, Brasilito, Flamingo etc.

Tamarindo is really nice but it is getting a bit overpopulated, and the sight of the ongoing constructions might ruin the tropical feeling... So you might wanna try other options too, like Dominical Beach,

And in case you want to read more about Jaco Beach,
http://jaco.incostaricaguide.com/

Check this out for more beaches http://beaches.incostaricaguide.com/

I hope you have lots of fun in Costa Rica! I miss it very much, I was there for a year and then moved to Panama for something different, but Costa Rica will always be my favorite tropical destination!

Tamarindo is probably your best option.

There's already some good suggestions above. The only things i can add are to got to the national Tourism website which is excellent, and do some more research. http://www.tourismrankings.com/Puerto-Rico/

Then see if any of the other ideas fit in with it and also compare prices and hotel pictures ( which reveal a lot ) on this directory website.
