Which city in Ecuador is good stay in if...? |
I'm going to these activities:
Horseback riding
birdwatching
kayaking/rafting
go to the Galapagos Islands
Rainforest/jungle tours
I don't mind going to different cities to these activities so if i can't do these activities all in one city (except going to the galapagos) give me one city that i could do most or traveling from that city would be easy. And can you give me a hotel(s) too? |

Quito is a great place to stay to have easy access to the activities you are interested in and more. Tour guide Angel Rea does all of the above from Quito. There is bird watching at the Parque Metropolitano in Quito, and the jungle and rainforest are very close. Also, Quito is between Mindo and Banos. Banos is the portal of the jungle and has lots of waterfalls and tame river rafting AND bunjee jumping. Horseback riding is nearby Quito also. There are daily flights to the Galapagos. Angel is a native Ecuadorian. He KNOWS where all the hot spots are and where the great but less traveled are. I'm sure he can give you further information on kayaking and river rafting. You can reach him through my website, http//:www.quito-colonial.com. I have hotels listed that I can personally recommend, and Hotel Colon Hilton by Ejido Park is great and has excellent food.

I'd suggest two locations; Mindo and BaƱos.
Mindo is located a little more than 2 hours west of Quito (the countries capital) and near the Mindo-Nambillo rainforest preserve. the Mindo area provides excellent opportunities for both horseback riding and birdwatching. And, because it is situated near the edge of the preserve, you'll have ample options for guided tours into the rainforest.
BaƱos, another option located about 4 hours south of Quito, is a popular destination for both foreigners and Ecuadorian nationals alike. The town is located at the base of the active volcano Tungarauga which is the source of the hotsprings located all around the area (which gives rise to the towns namesake- BaƱos means 'baths' in spanish; There is a public mineral bath located at the eastern end of the town) The area is excelent for exploration and there is plenty of horseback and ATV rental options available, as well as rafting. (though, don't expect any whitewaters as the rivers nearby are rather tame.)
In either case, any reputable hotel can help make arrangements, or you'll find that small tourism shops are omnipresent in both locations and can accomidate you almost on the fly.
There are daily flights from both Quito and Guayaquil to the Galapagos islands via AeroGal airlines.
You may find it handy to pick up a copy of the Lonely Planet Ecuador Travel Guide, if you don't have one already. The lastest edition is better than ever and contains ample details on both of the cities mentioned above (I personally recommend the Sanjay hotel in BaƱos). Here is a direct link to the book at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/174104295X/?tag=cy03-20 |
