I have no doubts that Rio de Janeiro is the safer city, nothing against Mexico city, actually the 2 cities have your beauties and ugliness, but Rio de Janeiro have some special attractives, besides Rio have a good structure focused on Tourism,
Who has never heard about carnival in Rio, the most amazing popular party in the world? Or who has never heard
about Sugar Loaf Mountain and the statue of Christ Redeemer, one of the new seven wonders of the world? Or
about the beautiful beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, that have inspired musicians from all over the world? Or,
also, who has never heard about the Tijuca National Park – the largest urban area natural preservation area in the
Country? Rio is all that. And much more. Since the city’s weather is hot and pleasant all through the year, Rio does
not depend on seasons to attract visitors. Its attractions can be appreciated any time of the year.
When I was there i travelled by a really good agency, http://www.riodejaneiro-hotels.travel/ this guys are really good ones...
Oh if what to read something about the two cities the New Your Times:

With the warring going on between the Mexican government and the drug cartels, Mexico is considered to be in the top fifteen most dangerous places in the world right now. |

In Brazil they speak portuguese, so it's the same there (both countries have diferent languages than english), it doesnt matter because the people at the airport, in the hotel etc...will speak english and maybe some normal people you meet at the street. Mexico is as dangerous as any other place, and rio de janeiro too. So you decide? |

Soooooo, this guy had a horrible experience. Nice. Well, I didn't. I had a wonderful experience so who's right? Book with a reputable hotel, make sure it is in the city center on the drag. If you want a good hotel spot in Mexico City choose a hotel on Plaza de la Reforma (the main avenue) in the Zona Rosa. It's super simple - call the american embassy in each city and ask for a hotel they recommend. Both city's are dangerous. Ask people who have actually lived, are actually living there, that's why the embassy in each city is your best bet. As far as the guy bad-mouthing Mexico City, a friend of mine was shot in Bulverde, TX, population 6000, does that mean it's a horrible place? |

I would say Rio de Jainero but I have never been there. I have been to Mexico City and it is extremely dangerous! I was there with my mom, my sister and my nephew and we had a horrible experience. We were so terrified of the hotel we booked we left at about midnight b/c we were all so scared, then we felt all the taxis wanted to rob us. If you do decide to go I suggest you stay in a well known hotel like Camino Real. There is lots to see but we even came back before our return date. |
