Which country in South America to visit? |
I am close to accumulating enough mileage points to travel long distance and I'm considering South America. I can only visit one or two countries, which ones would you recommend? I'm coming from Asia and the thought of it is just so far out, it's literally on the other side of the planet, both latitude and longitude! I will be travelling alone and on a budget so backpackers places are okay, as long as they're safe and clean. |

I am currently an American expat living and working in Ecuador and I would recommend you go to Ecuador and Colombia. Ecuador uses the USD and Colombia is very cheap and you will get to see the amazon, beaches and a great collection of wonderful international cities. I have found VIVA travel guides to be the best source of information online about South America. Here is a link to their website:

I recommend Peru. The capital is spectacular; then there's Machu Pichu, the Amazon, Lake Titicaca, the petroglyphs, and numerous other spectacular ruins and beaches to enjoy. |

It's feasible to do the Southern Cone. If you fly to either Buenos Aires, Montevideo or Santiago, the other two are within reach either by air, land or river. Those three countries are reasonably safe and friendly but learn some Spanish!!! |

I have enjoyed visiting Colombia and Peru. Contrary to popular belief, Colombia is relatively safe if you are reasonably careful. Colombia has a lot of history, but Peru is loaded with historical sites. Knowing some spanish would be helpful. |

I'd recommend Brazil, especially its southeastern coast with its large cities like Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. |

I would say CHILE its the most safe, all the others are crime ridden, like Argentina and Brazil and Colombia |

I've been to Sao Paulo, Brazil and all around Ecuador, and I'm going back to Ecuador this summer.
Sao Paulo is great, it's a big city and there's a lot to do. But it's about as expensive as New York. If you just have an American passport, you'll need a tourist visa, which was a little over $200. I would say that it's all worth it. Sao Paulo is a really developed state.
Ecuador was really fun. It's a lot cheaper. It's about the size of Colorado and they have mountains, beach and Amazonian rainforest. It's not a wealthy country and it's more dangerous than Sao Paulo. |
