Which is the best South American country for me to move to?

My friend is a United States citizen and wants to move to South America when he retires but he doesn't know where. What do you think?

Argentina!! my friends love Argentina, "little Europe". The flight time is kinda long but he'll love it.
Anyways, i think he should visit before going so he could make his own decision.

Costa Rica is beautiful and depending on where you go its pretty cheap. Land along the coast is getting very popular with the Americans and is getting expensive fast.
Nicaragua is nice. The dollar goes a long way. Most of the country in very poor. Although I've never personally had any problems there, it can be dangerous for gringos.
I'm planning on moving to Colombia in 4 to 5 years. I've been all over the country without any problems. People still warn that its dangerous; but most of the cities have been cleaned up and are safe. The areas next to the Ecuador boarder and around Cali can be dangerous still. Colombia is absoultley beautiful and some of the most friendly people in the world. Bogota and Medellin are world class cities; very modern with beautiful views of the mountains. Cartagena and Santa Marta, on the coast are beautiful cities, beautiful beaches and water. My sugesstion would be to travel to several areas and decide.

How about Brazil, can you take me with you when you go?

I'd say Costa Rica. They call it the Rose of the Isthmus. Lots of people are moving there to retire. The country with the least problems in the region.

ARGENTINA!!! Es lo mejor! Argentina has amazing people, amazing food and amazing culture. It would be a great place to live when you retire.

Uruguay, Costa Rica and Panama are the most popular for relatively inexpensive retirement living. The visa situation (ability to get residence for retirees) is fairly easy, there are some tax benefits for retirees, there are other expat retirees there and so there are social activities, other English speakers and such. Medical care of a decent caliber is available. They are politically fairly stable, and local residents generally welcome the retirees, unlike Mexico where they have become a target for -- shall we say "inappropriate" and "unwelcoming" - behavior.

Beware! The Democrats are trying to put through a bill that would impose a very heavy exit tax on departing retirees' nest eggs! Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, et al have all signed on to this bill and the notion of taxing "wealth" - even if it is your hard earned & hard saved IRA, 401k, or other savings for your retirement.

South America is beautiful as a whole. Depending on what kind of climate he is looking for there is different countries. Brazil is known for its beaches. Colombia is beautiful but with the guerrilla it is a little dangerous. Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia have different climates in themselves. They have beaches and also mountains where the climate is not as hot. Argentina and Chile have warm climate and also cold climate that there are regions where you can actually go skiing and such. So in a nutshell. It is difficult. Its up to him and what he is looking for.
