For the Best fishing in the world you have to go to Quepos!

This is the fishing village that has all of the bill fish tournaments every year and they always catch the largest fish in the world! - amongest other edible catches of snook, red snapper, etc. -

I would suggest you go to the web and put in "Fish Charter companies in Quepos, Costa Rica" - There are tons of them there because their "Charter Fleet" comprises about sixty plus vessels of all sizes for catching any kind of fish you may have in mind.

You can reach Quepos from San Jose by flying "Sansa Air Service" which costs about $130.00 round trip and the trip only takes about 28 minutes to fly there! Otherwise you can drive the 55 miles and it will take you approximately four - five hours due to their roads, etc!

And you can stay at the Great Western Kamuck Hotel for about $50.00 per night which is a first class hotel with an excellent inexpensive restaurant and a fantastic wine list!

I always stay at the Kamuck when I visit Manuel Antonio Beach every year.

As for fishing, I'll tell you where I went fishing and loved it. It cost $100 and since there were five of us, it was only $25/person. It's on the Tamarindo beach (in Guanacaste). Go to Pedro's restaurant and ask for Jason. Jason and his father-in-law take people on fishing tours and its really nice. I think the $100 was for two hours. We caught some big Tuna and even a Mahi Mahi. Jason is American, so you don't have to worry if you don't know Spanish.

I think the best bet for the two combined events is to go to Quepos and then visit Manuel Antonio forest preserve nearby. Great beaches at the preserve and you should spend an afternoon laying around on one of them.

the transportation from airport area in San Jose would be either rent a car ($50.00 a day) or hop on a small plane which is quite common in costa Rica (Very fast travel and you avoid the roads). Last choice is a bus ride which is an adventure at times but again, the most common form of travel in the country. If you want to experience some of their lifestyle, do it-it's cheap.
Now to the fishing stuff. You can get your best value when you have several people to split the cost and you don't all need to fish at the same time anyway. Catch a big sailfish or tuna and you won't feel like fishing for awhile. the size of the boat and the crew type and size also affect the price. I'm sure you can get to Quepos and find a way to join some others looking to cut their cost as well. The boat captains are familiar with this and should be very helpful on this. I got a great book from the "Lonely planet" publishers called "Costa Rica" and it's great.
