Managua, with a population of about 1,380,100 is the capital city of Nicaragua. Situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua, at 12°9′N 86°16′W, the city was made the national capital in 1855; previously the capital had alternated between the cities of León and Granada. Managua is overwhelmingly populated by Spanish-speaking Whites and Mestizos. There are also third, fourth and fifth generation communities of Catalonians, Germans, Italians, and French as well as Middle-Easterns. Asians — entirely Japanese and Chinese (both Mainlanders and Taiwanese) — recently there is also a growing number of Americans moving to Managua and Nicaragua in general due to cheap real estate prices compared to neighbouring Costa Rica.
Former Cathedral of Managua by NightManagua is considered to be the safest city in Central America and one of the safest cities in all of the Americas, surprisingly much more than many North American cities. The city has been witness to many of the rises and falls of political powers across the history of Nicaragua, and also suffering two devastatng earthquakes in the 20th century alone. Nonetheless Managua has shown to be a tenacious city and still stands, as it continues to be an interesting and developing city, growing quite economically.
Managua is also considered somewhat confusing for visitors, because it has no street names or addresses. After the 1972 earthquake the city regrew organically and street signs were generally not replaced. Directions are always given relative to landmarks, but landmarks are often used which no longer exist [1]. There has been suggestions that there be an organization of the system of address for more simplicity. |

Managua is not as special as the people are.The city was damaged by a hurricane.I have enjoy visited towns outside of Managua which are much prettier. The Mirador in Catarina is a beautiful place to visit. Also La Isla de Ometepe is superb...stay at Hotel Villa Paraiso or Hotel Charco de Verde.Stay a night in Granada and rent a small guided boat to visit the islands. You can catch a taxi in Granada and ask them to take you to where the boats are launched which is at the end of the park. You do not want to walk alone in Managua. There are robberies and avoid walking alone especially at night. There are so many beautiful places to visit in Nicaragua.Always wear mosquito repellant. It is much better to go during the Nica "winter". It is much greener and more beautiful. |

Managua is a city I love. The climate is quite hot, maybe like Miami, usually like 32 to 45 degrees celcius depending on the time of the year and part of the city. at night its between 26 and 34 depending time of the year and part of the city. usually december and january have the coolest nights with gentle breezes. The people are friendly, but drivers (specially taxi and bus) are quite tough drivers. in this moment, most people in the country are a bit bothered by the upcoming elections (it happens every time). i recommend a very good page about information about the country and it is: www.vianica.com
good luck in the lovely nicaragua!
