I have lived here all my live and been to the beach every summer of my life! The Pacific ocean is not very nice in the sense that the sea is rough. In Lima, the beaches are not nice if you compare them to the ones in the Atlantic or the Caribbean. The sea looks kind of grey and the temp of the water is quite cold Humboldt current) . However, we have beautiful beaches up north, due to the NiÃ±o current. The sea is more light blue, there are palm tress, the temp of the water is great. Try beaches up north like Colan, Mancora, Las Pocias, etc (Piura and Tumbes deparments)
Also, go south to Moquegua and Arequipa and you will find nice beaches like Mejia. I have to say Lima's beaches are not very nice due to the fact that Lima lies in a semi desert.

The beaches in Peru are very good, but I prefer MÃ¡ncora. MÃ¡ncora is a town and beach resort in the Piura Region, in northwestern Peru.
The beach town has over 30 different beach resorts that receive tourists from all over South America. It is not uncommon to see license plates anywhere from Argentina or Chile to Colombia. It boasts a large porportion of luxury restaurants and nightclubs for being a town of 10,000. Resorts brim the nearby kilometers of beaches connected by on road. Most people arrive by bus, private car, or plane from the Talara Airport or Tumbes Airport. Currently tourism is booming as a humongous influx of tourists take to the beaches all year round. In 2005 340,000 tourists visited Mancora. The resort town has the magical ability to seem private and empty when relaxing on the beach, while brimming with people late into the night at the many nightclubs in town playing loud music. It is extremely well connected to the rest of the country and world. Buses run down the Peruvian coast to Lima every day with various different companies varying in quality and price.

The beaches of Peru are excellent!

At this time of the year, Mancora is a very good option to stay.
But I definitely recommend the beaches of Punta Sal and Organos they are really excellent.

I would agree with other contributors here that the best beaches BY FAR are in the north: Mancora and Punta Sal in particular are probably the best and are the closest thing Peru has to offer to the Mexico/Caribbean/Thailand white-sand experience. They're nice and great for a few days relaxation, but they aren't going to make too many top 10 lists.

Having said that, they are nice, chilled-out little places with great seafood and plenty of nightlife so well worth a visit. From Lima, you can fly to Piura or Tumbes and get the bus (or taxi) from there. Alternatively you can get the coach from Lima and pretty much anywhere else on the coast - long trip, though.

There are a lot of beaches in Peru. Each region has its owns.For example: the southern beaches near Lima. This is the summer hotspot for Lima inhabitants. Starting at around 35 km of the South-Pan American Highway, a string of beautiful beaches stretches down 100 km along the coastline to the city of Canete (135 km south). Beaches are either sandy or pebbled, while some feature perfect waves for surfing, others enjoy calmer seas. Many beaches provide services such as hotels, restaurants and discos. Others have preserved their natural surroundings, something which appeals to campers (Chepeconde, Cerro Colorado).

Up North..you will find some nice beaches..resorts..the folks are very nice too.

there are only surfers at the beach (in Lima)
