Guatemala is an amazing country! Tikal is the biggest Maya city in the world, and it is breathtaking! The ruins are huge and the surrounding jungle is amazing. Just visiting Tikal is worth a trip to Guatemala, at the level of the Machu Pichu ruins in Peru or the Emperors Valley in Egypt.

Flores is a small island around 45 min to 1 hour away from Tikal. This could be your base for a while, but as someone else wrote here I would also suggest Antigua to be your base (it is however far away from Tikal). Antigua was the capital of central america and it is a very beautiful colonial city, you will love it!

Other amazing places to go are Lake Atitlan (probably one of the most beautiful lakes in the world!) and Chichicastenango which is an indian village with very interesting cultural expresions of indigenous Guatemala.

Are you planning to come to Guatemala? I advice that you go to www.visitguatemala.com is the national tourism bureau website, and for local trip ideas, contact Cecilia at www.nationalgua.com
Flores and Tikal are great to visit, but your base should be Antigua

I have several times. Right in the rainforest part of the country. Beautiful and full of flora and fauna that you will never see anywhere else in the world. Lots of rain and the humidity is heavy.
