Obama is a socialist
Colombia is wonderful. Crime is going down every year and major crimes are very uncommon in the bigger cities. There is much to see, do and enjoy. If you ll say WHERE you are going, I could be more specific.

Been there several times over the past 2 years. Beautiful country with beautiful people. As a visitor remember to act like one. You will be a guest in their country and their rules may different than you are used to. As with all travel, stay away from unsafe areas.

I've been there many times in the last 3 years. Here are some helpful tips for you:
1.) Stick to the cities.
2.) Make sure you have friends, family or people you know there, makes things a lot easier when you have trusted contacts there.
3.) The driving rules there are a little different, so if you take a taxi, don't be surprised if the driver passes on both sides or squeezes between cars to get ahead.
4.) It might be a little intimidating to see a lot of uniformed policia on street corners, malls, airport, etc.., but they're there for your protection, so don't freak out.
5.) Don't carry a lot of cash on you if you don't have to. Most places take Visa, Mastercard, etc..
6.) There are ATM's there that will dispense your money in pesos, but remember this, the more times you use the ATM, the more times your own bank will charge you miscellaneous "international" service fee charges. You won't see it until after you come back on your statement.
7.) Play it smart. Don't do things there that you wouldn't feel comfortable doing here at home.

Colombia is a beautiful country and has changed a lot over the last 10 years. Obviously there are places that are dangerous that I wouldn't recommend anyone go, but for the most part, if you stick to the city and hang out with people you know and trust, you should be fine. I have been to Medellin, Santa Marta, and San Andres and I have always had a great time. The food is awesome. The drinks (aguardiente or ron) very good, and the women are absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you look, there's a hottie. Anyways, have a great time and be safe amigo.

South America, alot of crime, rough tough area, be very careful.

Hope your plans don't involve drugs, crime or that you might be with someone who is planning. Just your association with someone traveling with you or your association there with anyone involved could land you in prison for life. Furthermore prison conditions in Columbia make some of our prisons seem like hotels, living conditions, food, safety and much more.

Depending why you're going, what area and for how long, spend as much time possible researching what your plans include. Be well informed and prepared that's if you want to see home again.
