Mostly because of the weather. And that´s it. The violence is increasinly dangerous, the people are nasty and we don´t like foreigners.
But as a turists, they are welcome.

Scandal
They call it,the land of the Eternal Spring.

Guatemala is a BEAUTIFUL country and the people are beautiful, hardworking, devoted to family. As we drove through Guatemala, generally everywhere the people dress in native clothing touched me deeply. Often the men dress native as well as the women. The work they put into their clothes is amazing. Mostly they are hand loomed and sewn. The colors are often very bright. Often a LOT of hand embroidering will go into their clothes. In the big cities this is not the same. We found the people very curious and friendly. They did not "surround" us or anything. Just when we stopped to have a sandwich or car trouble, we would end up talking with 1 and before long, there would be a dozen around. We don't speak very good Spanish, so it was full of miming and giggles.

The country and it's people are so beautiful. Be sure and watch the video sent. We have been to Lake Atitlan, one of the loveliest places we've ever been. The Mayan people do beautiful work. Guatemala is affordable and peace is in the air these days. There is nothing not to like, love and enjoy.

There are lots of Pros and Cons about living in Guatemala. I was born there, and moved to the US when I was about 5, but i've visited a few times.
I've asked myself that question too, and here's my list of Pros and Cons:

Pros:

Its a beautiful Country

The weather is almost always the same, with beautiful sunny days, and nice cool evenings. There's only 2 seasons. Winter and Summer.
Almost anywhere you'd live, you would have wonderful weather.

The Culture

There is so much culture in the Country, it would take years and years to understand it all. From the ruins in Belize, to the wonderful colors they use in their weaving, its all beautiful.

Up-To-Date

I don't think you can ever want something and not find it there. Fashion, technology, gadget wise, its all up to date. Want McDonalds? you'll find tons of them in the capital City. Sears, Macy's, Walmarts, its all there. And if you haven't noticed, many things we have here are FROM Guatemala. So there's no shortage of anything over there....that is, if you have enough Quetzales to pay for it. (that's Guatemala's currency)

Cons:

The main con at this time is all of the rebels and and all of the gangs that are all over the country.
Of course, if you have enough money to live in the glitzy neighborhoods, you really wont see any of this, but why live in a bubble?

There are daily shoot-outs, bank robberies, busses that are robbed, etc... lately, there's also been a lot of violence against women, and such.

All of this takes away from the natural beauty of the country that is called "The land of eternal Spring."

Its a beautiful place, with dangerous people.

Still, if you stay out of trouble, and don't go where you're not supposed to be, then you'd be ok.

Oh, and one last thing:
They drive like Crazy down there. Only the very brave and fearless drive down there.

Good Luck!

Guatemala is a beautiful country. Parts of Guatemala have a perfect climate. Guatemala is full of happy, friendly people.

Why would you live anywhere else?

Check out the videos at http://www.atitlan.net . They will give you a good introduction to Guatemala.

Jennifer
You will never forget Guatemala it is gorgeous. But this country has issues with violence and gangs.
