Why did america want to build a canal across panama?

It's cheaper, safer, and faster than sailing around the tip of South America. Panama is the narrowest place, so it required the least digging. It made sense to put it there.

Plus, from a military perspective, you really only need one fleet, rather than two (one for the Pacific and one for the Atlantic).

so they didn't have to sail around south america.

it was a major route for trade, so by building a canal america could circulate trade and thus become wealthy. also, we would have control over who comes and goes. that way, if we're at war with germany, we can severely hurt their economy by not allowing them to pass.

If they didnt they would have sail around alot of land- the quickest way through is a straight line

If you or any of your ancestors had gone around the tip of South America you wouldn't even ask that question.
Aside from the fact that sea is treacherous.. the canal was a total short cut from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.

Well, some people say that the US needed a shortcut to send its Marine ships and Army boats to protect the islands of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guatanamo from the Spanish Empire.
At that moment, I think that most of the soldiers and stuff were in the west coast of the US, so they had to build a shortcut, unless they wanted to go through all South America.

Quicker delivery. Less gas, less time. All around time saver!

The idea and construction of the canal was started by a French ingeneer: Ferdinard de Lesseps in 1880´s. It was their idea, then they sold it to the US, and the US continued the construction. The US got a good deal: for 40 million dollars they got the territory and the rights to continue construction, then administration and manteinance of the Canal. The US recieved all the economic benefits of the canal untill the year 2000.
