Why do american people only know Brazil as one country of latin america?

i mean, i told a usa friend about my country and she had no idea... as well as the rest of them.

I am sorry to say education in american High schools is highly deficient. I am a teacher and I know that for a fact. Geography is not taught properly basically because people in USA (not all of the God bless them!) think the US is the only country in the world and they only care about them. Most high schools do not teach world geography and therefore the kids grow up to be quite ignorant and only know about their states, their food, their things.
Luckily, private schools do teach these things and more americans are learning that the world does not begin or end in the US.

Many have not taken the time to discover the other lovely countries there. They offer alot of different cultures.

Because AmeriKans have an inadequate eduction and they are functional illiterates... who know NOTHING of GEOGRAPHY... or just about anything else, for that matter.

When I lived in NEW Mexico, you wouldn't believe how many of these stupid AmeriKans would ask me if they needed a passport and a visa to visit Santa Fe.

Not only do I know Brazil and every other Latin American nation, I know every country on the planet and can even draw a world map and draw the borders and place the capitals in the correct spot and I'm an American.

I would say Brazil, atleast where I live is the most well known country in the western hemisphere except for Canada and Mexico because so many Brazilians move here and integrate better than other immigrants, such as learning English faster, having both American and Brazilian friends rather than just Brazilian friends only. So Americans like to know more about where there friends come from.

Geography is only a short class in American schools and is taught at a real young age so you forget most of it

If you ask most American people they can not tell you anything about their own country. How can they be expected to know something about other countries? The late night t.v. shows have a recurring skit where they go into the street and ask people simple questions, and then air the stupid funny answers. I used to think it was necessary to interview a lot of people to get those answers, but now I believe it is too common.

I can't answer for your friend, but I know quite a few countries. :)

What a nick name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jajajajajja

They dont know about our countries bcoz their general culture is very bad. You ask an american about lot of things that are common for us, about geography for example and they dont know it.I said geography.......but is not in the only thing that they are behind us.
We are 3rd world's countries.......but i'm very proud that my country has an excellent level of education.....
I have to recognize also, that when the ,militar dictatorships in southamerica, that level felt down, but in spite of that......we still are better that the americans in several ways. BTW........Which is your country?????

EDIT..........

Good for sellasell.......finally someone that remember us !!!
Thank you

Totally agree with lestermount

Mira al pedo.... Americans only know big and Brazil is the biggest country in SA. Furthermore, Brazil seems to be the only country in SA that George W. can go to without someone throwing a rotten mango at him!

Here in the US we are weak on Geography in our schools. But a similar thing occurs in the rest of the world. How many people realize that in the US there are 2 Washingtons? All schools have limited time to devote to certain subjects, and here in the US Social Studies has a lower priority than subjects such as Science, and Math. Also education in the US like most of the americas is very Eurocentric, with little attention for Asia or Latin America. Another thing is that Brazil doesn't appear in the news very often, at least not here in the US.

That is a gross overgeneralization. While some Americans are ignorant or unintelligent, some are quite intelligent and could list all the Latin American countries on a map. You shouldn't lump people together like that. It would be like someone saying, "Why are all Brazilians addicted to cocaine?"
