Wonderboy

Why do people spell Colombia (country) as Columbia?

I am just wondering why everyone spells it wrong, and why so many people ask me do I speak Colombian?

Is the world really that badly educated?

I wouldn't mind if people kept spelling Colombia with an "u" if at least they knew something about our country. And I'm not talking about people thinking all colombians are drug dealers, or even the ones who think "colombian" is a different language from spanish. I'm talking about people who don't even know Colombia is a country. I can't tell you how many people I've met who think that Colombia (or any other latin american country, for that matter) is actually a part of Mexico.

Well yes, it is because the world is badly educated.

But in English, Columbus's name is spelt with a "u", and the capital of the US

Sadly most people are not well traveled and they believe that ColOmbia (the country) is part of ColUmbia (the capitol of South Carolina) ColUmbia U in NY also spells it that way. Both ColOmbia and ColUmbia are derivatives of the name Columbus.. which has its roots in the word for Dove and Peace.
It is sad when I see that many folks believe that Mexicans are like Peruvians and Peruvians are like Argentines and that Colombia is a big jungle where everyone travels by burro looking like Juan Valdez..

The fact is that Colombia was actually named after the Spanish discoverer (Columbus). Also, the coffee country is pronounced /ka.'lam.bi.a/ (no IPA symbols allowed) in English so most English-speakers pronounce /a/ with the 'u'. For instance 'fun', gun, production, etc.

So the error is not only ignorance, but also of a linguistic nature; naitive speakers spell the word the exact way it is pronounced.

First of all, Cristoforo Colombo is called Christopher Columbus in English so it's not an unforgivable mistake. As far as ignorance, how many of you latins can name the states that border Oklahoma, or spell Louisiana? I have met US citizens who didn't even know the state of Idaho was west of the Mississippi. Every single one of us is ignorant about one thing or the other. Lighten up folks.

sadly, the world IS that badly educated.
i don't mean to be rude but it's all just ignorance in my opinion.
yeah, it gets me mad when people spell it with a u.
