HI, the reason for that is solely reputation from the 90's
things have changed GREATLY and for the better i glad to say
It takes time for people's image of the country to change but already it is
tourism has improved like on 20% everry year, and slowly people are entering deeper into the country so much that there isnt enough infrastructure to accomodate them, thats why there is a big contruction boom in the turisme sector.
if u look at travel destinations for 2009 u will see colombia in almost every single top 10.
I would recomment you to visit it, its a great country. But if u are still not sure, them maybe you should wait, but the opinion will change, and i am pretty sure by 2010 Colombia will be seen as anyother latinamerican destination with great potential, especially if u are into historical and nature seeing destination :) |

Because they dont know their a s s from third base Bogota is as safe or safer than any city its size. There are parts of Colombia that are still FARC controlled, but there are parts of NYC and LA that are Norteno, Blood and Crip controlled. Use your head. Dont flash a lot of cash. Youll love it. More national parks than ANY country except Brazil. The people are friendly, the food is good, the night life excellent. Go. Youll love it. |

The answer is ignorance, sprinkled with stupidity. I went there for the 10th time in 2008. I have traveled that Country extensively. And I am a Gringo with a capital "G." |

because there use to be alot of danger that some of the people in the war would kindnap you especialy if you were american becasue they could hold you for ransom for alot more money. they started saying that when an american plane crashed into the middle of the area where some war people were at. they took the americans for hostage for aboout 6years. but i went there in november and i have to say that its nothing like it use to be its realy safe now alot better and im gonna start going there mor often. the president found a way to make it so that they could rescue the americans |

Colombia , la gente la comida los paisajes son la berraquera no te dejes influir por la prensa amarillista, ve conoce disfruta y veras que no vas a querer volver .

people say that because of the drug cartels and the kidnappings... my family lives there and one of my cousins got kidnapped for ransom money... they returned her after my family gave them money
The cities there are just like any other big city in america.. your not gunna get shot walking down the street but you just gotta be careful and know your surroundings |

It's also like the drug capital of the world !! Ton's of crime... not a great place to visit. I'm sure there are areas that may be safe, but I think for the most part, it's just not. Too bad....cause there's some gorgeous scenery and sites to see there. |

It is not anymore... I'm from bogota and things have changed a lot. I currently work with many foreigners and they love the city and other places too. You just gotta be careful, use your head, know where you're going, etc. Hope you have the opportunity to come sometime and chek it for yourself.
I disagree with many of the answers above. We all know Colombia is not perfect and there are a lot of issues going on... but what country is perfect anyway? Anyway, most of us are trying to make it a better place to live in.
About drugs, yes, people know a lot of drugs are produced in Colombia but it's because the unemployment rate is so high that sometimes people don't have any other choice. Besides, it is a profitable job if you consider that most of those drugs are not used here in Colombia but exported to other countries where people love to get high and pay a lot for them.
bye |
