The Uruguay was first settled in the 1600s by the Spanish and Portuguese, with Spain establishing sole dominance after 1724. Uruguay declared independence from Spain in 1810 and from Argentina in 1814, struggling against Brazilian Empire occupation to finally achieve independence in 1828.
Only 35% of the population off South America speak Spanish.
50% speak Portuguese,
25 % speak French, English, Dutch and native South America languages.

It's been once occupied by Spain for quite a long time.

Many Spanish stayed for good and started families and lives, the locals learned the language of the occupier.

Spain was out but the language stayed.

Wutchyamacallit!
Most Uruguayans are grandsons of Spanish, Italian, German, French, other European families. Spanish is the official language, but i hear what you are trying to say.

It's a South American Country. All countries (except Brazil) in South America has Spanish as it's native language - along with Central America and Mexico.
