Why is Guatemala always given this image? |
So I am Guatemalan but I don't live there; Everytime I hear people describe Guatemalans they describe them as "short brown people making tamales." [ I don't mean to offend anyone ] & It makes me mad because NOT every Guatemalan is like that.
When learning about Guatemala in history; they still described them to be very out of date and I was "taught" that only the Ladinos live there which is COMPLETELY unaccurate.
When I traveled to Guatemala I went to the rich parts that no one teaches people about and everything was so high tech I was surprised because I wasn't expecting it.
I know that the "ladinos" make up the majority, but I'm just sick of people describing Guatemalans as "short and brown" because I saw people of all different skin colors [ such as me; I have white skin tone. ] |

Since the characteristics you describe belong to natives, (they like to be called mayans btw) they are the ones that wear the typicall outfits in some way they represent Guatemala. So when tourist think about Guatemala or see pictures, painitngs or videos from Guatemala they see this people and assume that all Guatemalans are like that
Unfortunately as you are aware this part of the population lives very very primitively and in most cases towns live under thier laws & not the laws under the Guatemalan constitution. Since they are so primitive most of them don't know how to readand write & live in really bad condicions and it gives the country a bad image.
Hi from Guatemala!!!! |

Is there something wrong with that? Do you think that all Scandinavians worry so much because everyone thinks that they are all super white, blond, and bule eyed? Nop.... It was so intersting how the other Guatemalans answered to your questions saying "don't worry I am Guatemalan and they get surprised when I say that I am because I am white". Yesterday I answered to a guy from your country who lives in the USA. where he conplained about Chapines in the US saying that they were from other countries, but not Guatemala because they felt embarassed.
It is a real pity that in Guatemala still today it is well seen to be European or even Yankee, but it is embarassing to look short, dark and have straight hair. Guatemala must be totally proud of Mayans and their decendants since the country would not be what it is today if they has not been there.
Don't worry about shorts or whites. Worry for what the short and dark people in your country get (which is not much) |

I loved Guatamala! Im only 13 and I went last year and it was so much fun. The people were so nice and that is how i ALWAYS describe them. Plus they all had good food...not just tamales. We had no trouble with the people and they all seemed very cultured. You are right too, alot of people are very educated too.
THATS SO AWESOME THAT UR GUATEMALAN! |

G'day xvenomouz,
Thank you for your question.
I think that people often are looking for what they expect. The media is prone to basing their reports on cliches especially when the part of the world that they are reporting on generally doesn't make the news all that often. I see that often reporting on Australia often repeats the same old cliches.

Unfortunately that´s the image foreigners have of Guatemala and not just Guatemala, that´s the image they have of most Latin American countries specially the Central American ones. They have this wrong image of us and not just the physical part, they also links us to drugs and stuff.
I have read here on Y!A that we are soaked on drugs and it´s JUST WRONG, people can be pretty judgmental and I get your point it´s a good one and I think that people should get more interested in getting to know a culture before talking about before hand that it´s just the basic thing to do. You´re not alone about how you feel, it´s not only guatemalans.
I´m also Central American and have white skin... |
