Why is it that Colombia is!!?

Spelled Columbia by some people?? People constantly spell the country COLOMBIA as "Columbia"?? I'm Colombian, and every time I see that it just gets me pissed off because that isn't how you are supposed to spell it. It's the same as Venezuela. Why don't people spell that "Venezuala" since that's how it sounds. hM? Please no rude answers, I'm just frustrated. :[

Obama is a socialist
Im with you. I used to send letters from Colombia to my aunt who was a school teacher. She was forever writing back to ColUmbia. It's frustrating and to me signals both a lack of knowledge about Colombia and a lack of respect to find out how it's really spelled. Imagine the derision if you sent a letter to someone at the white house in Warshington DC... It's the same thing

I am an US Citizen born and raised, I Happen to respect and enjoy ColOmbia greatly and love traveling there. I also get very frustrated when others spell Colombia as Columbia.... I assume the reason is ignorance and the fact that there are numerous "Columbia" cities and universities in the USA. I have to politely tell those who spell it wrong to make the correction; I often get the "deer in headlights" look back.

lol i kno what u mean.
when i was like in 2nd grade (in an ESL class) i was supposed to write a paper about my country (Colombia) and one of the A+ english speaking student helpers (who was like 3 years older) had to check my paper b4 handing it to the teacher.
and for some reason she always kept changing "ColOmbia" to "ColUmbia".
I told her that wasnt the way to spell it but she would just ignore me. When my mom saw my paper she was like "why did u spell Colombia Columbia?"
i was sooo mad lol
but now that i think about it, i think the girl probably got confused with "The District of Columbia" spelling rather than COLOMBIA the country spelling.

omg yes! i HATE when people do that. whether it's one of my friends or a teacher or something, that is just one of the things that has always aggravated me since i moved to the United States. It's really not a hard word to spell. and you already know, if we were spelling something wrong, there would be a damn fit thrown by someone lol .
worst thing like someone above me said - when teachers think we as colombians are spelling it wrong and change it to a U. its ridiculous lol

TYRONE! reloaded!!
Será porque asocian el nombre con la "Columbia Británica" ... ¿¿?? ..

Uppss sorry ... because some people associate Colombia with British Columbia .. it sounds more familiar to them :'-(

I'm guilty of this misspelling and I assure you, I mean no disrespect; it's simply a phonetic error.
Knowing a bit of Spanish, spelling Venezuela properly is phonetic for me.

I get your frustration. I've spelled my name Jennie since childhood but still have close friends/family spell it Jenny. It's a minor issue, but bothersome still.

rekugun86
lol. I hate it too. My bf who is Colombian is the one that pointed it out to me when I was spelling/saying it wrong. Since then I have tried to get other to write it the right way (and say it the right way too) But what you have to understand is the ColUmbia is a popular streetname, item, brand name, etc. in Amercia. So People think that ColUmbia is the right way to spell and say ColOmbia the country. No one means disrespect it is just a misunderstanding.
