I lived on Ft. Gulick which also has access to Gatun Lake . When we were new, we used to fish and have parties there .. . . and we'd sleep on the ground over-night only 20 feet from the shoreline . UNTIL. . . . . one of our Panamanian friends found out and warned us of the dangers . GATORS !! He took us out there one night and shined a light on the surface of the lake, and we saw several very large gators patrolling the surface of the water !!
Needless to say, we NEVER slept on the ground again, but we did continue to fish all night at times .

One of our favorite, but risky games that we played, was Canoe Wars . We'd take canoes out on Gatun Lake and ram each other in an attempt to tip over the other canoe. . .. and dump those 2 guys in Gator Infested Waters !!! You should see what it's like when your canoe is tipped over and you're scrambling to get it upright and you back in it quickly !!

BTW, 2 quick points of note. . . .Very near Gatun Lake, there were signs posted warning of Piranha. . . .but I never saw any .
And Gatun Lake is the best lake that I've ever fished in . Beautiful and abundant large Peacock Bass that are also great eating . And the locals were always willing to clean them for us for a small price !!
Great memories . . . .Thank you !!!

This week an 17 ft alligator was running from the lake into the city through a storm pipe.

Never heard of this place, but most lakes that you are not allowed to swim in is for environmental reasons. They don't want bodily, err, um...feces or urine and things like that. Especially if it's a lake has a lot of animal life inhabitating in and around the lake. Other reasons could be that the water may already be contaminated in some way......or theres always the fact that there may be the lock-ness-monster (or just gators).
