Why some people refuse to accept that Puerto Rico is a country?

I really do not understand why some people still do not understand the Caribbean and Latin American history when they refuse to accept Puerto Rico as a country.

Some Facts:
Puerto Rico (as well as Cuba and Dominican Republic) has over 500 years of history.
Puerto Rico has competed in the World Olympics with it's national team since 1948, the national anthem of Puerto Rico has been heard many times since then.
Puerto Rico's national identity is recognized world wide.
Puerto Rico also belongs as a nation in many other world organizations

Why some people think that because Puerto Rico has not achieved full sovereignty (it is a self governing non sovereign country with a non permanent association with the US as a Estado Libre Asociado it is not a country or nation?
Additional Details
1. Puerto Rico national team: http://www.olimpur.com/

2. United Nation country profile for Puerto Rico :

Yes, Puerto Rico is a country by all definitions.
politically, Puerto Rico is a country that is associated under a compact of association with the US, i guess that is why some people get confused and think PR is a US state or something like that when it is not.

Because ignorant people think that countries (nations) come out of thin air right after their independence day, a well educated person knows that nations (countries) are formed thru a historic process, India for example is a country that did not achieved it;s independence until the 20th century but that does not mean it was not a nation before that, it simply was a non sovereign country, but still a nation (country). In the caribbean Jamaica is a good example of a country (nation) that was not independent until the 1970's/ That does not mean that jamaicans where not a nation before that , they smply were not sovereign (independent) but all the people in that island shared same language, history, religion and ethnic background and national identity as Jamaicans, get it?

Puerto Rico definetly is a country (recognized even by the United Nations) since they have all the attributes of a nation, even if they are not fully independent like India was before it;s independence day.

A nation is a political science -sociology term that it is not defined by the sovereignty date.
That is why you had many nations across eastern europe, africa and latin america acting like colonial outposts of powerful states like the USSR, UK, Germany...
Most of these nations achieved it's sovereignty, some are still struggling with it like Puerto Rico, Tibet and Scotland.

This is a rare occasion when I agree with adyari. Puerto Rico ISNT a country. Its a common wealth of the US. However, I would GLADLY vote FOR you if you chose to secede from the union. Then youd need a passport to come to the US AND a visa.

Costa Rica '03
It's not a question of accepting Puerto Rico as a country or not, it's what the facts are. Ms Adyari explained it very well with "Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico." I'm sure no one has heard Puerto Rico called "La Nacion de Puerto Rico" or The Nation of Puerto Rico, or if they have, it would be from someone "ignorant" as Hdz put it.

The fact that someone born in Puerto Rico is automatically a US citizen should be proof enough that Puerto Rico is a not a country. The USA does NOT give out citizenship for free to peoples of OTHER countries. It is a commonwealth of the USA.

Are you in denial!? Puerto Rico has never been its own country.

Spain owned them and now the U.S. owns them. Its always been just a territory.

Edit: lol why is everybody whos saying no getting thumbs down?

Adyari
Simply because Puerto Rico is NOT a country. It is a commonwealth of the U.S. Everyone born in PR is a U.S. citizen. History does not determine whether certain territory is a country or not.

From its "country" profile: Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico (Commonwealth of Puerto Rico).
Government type: Commonwealth
Chief of state: President George W. BUSH
