Will I be safer If I carry a machete with me in the county side of Guatemala?

Locals carry machete around with them on the tralls . They do not get robbed . Can I strap 1 to my pack. What about the police , will they come after me if I have one?

The odds of you getting robbed in the country compared to the cities is pretty low and the locals don't get robbed because they have nothing to steal. If a ladron accosts you and your machete is strapped to you back, I would say it wouldn't do you much good anyway. Lastly, the bad guys are much handier with a machete (or a gun) than you are so one still probably wouldn't do much for you other than get you hurt even worse. However, a machete can be pretty handy for other things including those snakes you're planning to look for, and I doubt very much if the rural police are going to worry if you have one.

They carry machetes off trails as well and they do get robbed.

I wouldn't recommend it. Most thugs have guns now.

The recommended protocol when accosted by thugs is to not resist the robbery hand over your crap and they'll let you walk away. Make sure you carry a little cash. All murders/injuries involved resistance of some sort and/or the person not having any money on them.

Its bizarre but your basically giving them a tip to leave you alone.

What the hell?!

Manny
why would you carry a machete?
maybe if you wanna feel safe take a small knife with you, it´s not that bad as people say!
