Not anytime soon. Nicaragua is listed as the second poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti. You can see why Haiti is since it's part of a small island? But Nicaragua? It's the largest country in central America. Costa Rica is like it is because of a stable government and they offer tax breaks for foreigners to encourage investment in their country. Nicaragua still suffers from the effects of the Sandanistas and seems to still subscribe to the old ways. It's a third world country that by all rights should by the merits of geography alone be powerful but until the people and the government throw off their mindset it will always be the same.

i believe it will develop more because of greedy expats trying to sell off the land. for the other reasons it might be slow but it will happen. Each time I have visited the number of tourist and development has more than trippled. quite alarming. Lets hope it stays the gem that it is

Nicaragua faces a number of challenges that will prevent it from developing like Costa Rica. First, Costa Rica has good water and a good basic health care system because it hasn't had to pay for an army. Without good water, it is unlikely that you are ever going to be as attractive to expatriates as Costa Rica. Nicaragua is unlikely to ever give up its army. With an army development is going to be a lot slower in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua needs to keep its best and brightest in the country to work. Right now about 800,000 Nicaraguans live and work in Costa Rica because of the high unemployment in their home country.

This is not to say that Nicaragua can't develop. It just has to overcome a number of obstacles before it could develop in the same way as Costa Rica.
