For the underground jobs you mention, you can find opportunites in San Jose or in the hotels around the coast, like in the Guanacaste area.

Every foreigner needs a work permit to work there. Unless you find not so trusted employers. Without a permit, it would be difficult for you to get a job.

I'm confident a resourceful person like yourself will find 'underground' work in Costa Rica, however...

I have a quick note of caution: You risk not getting paid by your 'employer' without recourse if the 'employer' decides they don't feel like paying you ... because you have no legal right to work in the country in the first place - even as a dishwasher.

Also, you risk deportation without the ability to return to Costa Rica in going 'underground'. Costa Rica (unlike the U.S.) takes it's immigration seriously. Which could mean, as an example; you meet a beautiful Tica, fall in love and then you get the boot - never to see her again.

Maybe you could try getting hired by a foreign or Costa Rica company that will sponsor you for the work visa you desire ... it might save on allot of future headaches and uncertainty.

Where are u planning to move? R u gonna be at the capital or outside of it?
Besides, there are a lot of opportunities in the city as cooker, but you should check first if u really wanna work on that!

Well, in Costa Rica it is technically illegal to hire anyone who is NOT a costa rican citizen without applying for a work permit. In this country to be granted a work permit you need to be "skilled" enough that NO Costa Rican could fill the position. That being said, there is work available as you said underground.

I am Canadian and I practise massage which is very easily paid in cash by anyone. I also have a job writting for a website that helps people who are traveling around the country. My skills have really helped me be able to support myself here.

If you are looking for the most opportunity for illegal work that is unskilled, I think the central Valley will have the most to offer you. San Jose, Heredia, and San Ramon are busy centres where people probably can use the help and keep you paid in Cash. The coast and other tourist destinations may be harder to find work because they have to deal with the Tourism Institute of CR and they could loose there permits etc for hiring people illegally.

Best of luck to you, make sure you have enough money to support yourself for at least a month. you may need to travel around the country a bit before you find the "right" position.
