Would you take anti-malaria tablets for Costa Rica?

No, you don't need anti-malaria tablets in Costa Rica. There is no malaria in Costa Rica. If you are going to go to Nicaragua then yes. In Costa Rica the health concern is dengue fever, caused by some mosquitos. There are no medications or vaccines. So the best thing is prevention: insect repellent, with at least 23% DEET.
Have a great trip!

If you're going to be in coastal areas or where coffee is growing, yes.

Ask your G.P that`s what he`s there for. Different drugs for different countries depending on the time you are visiting & for how long you expect to be there.

The incidence of malaria in Costa Rica is very low. I would not bother with the tablets, since the side effects are very uncomfortable. ( I took them once to go to La Mosquitia in Honduras) There are a few remote areas in Costa Rica where you can get malaria, not really touristy sites.

It depends upon what you are doing and where you are going. San Jose, the Central Valley and Monteverde are too high for malarial mosquitos. There is no issue in the Pacific beach areas as well. However, if I were to spend time in rural areas along the Nicaraguan border or near Panama on the Atlantic side, I would take chloroquine. Costa Rica does not have Chlorquine resistent malaria.

If in doubt. Take it.

Be careful of the quanine..,i had used an over the counter drug for restless legs and I got extremely ill,I vomited for 3 days ran a high fever and was out for those three days except for getting sick.It is because as with alot of medications you are being given the disease to build an immunity from it.Just watch your reactions mine was not pleasant.Try taking it a week or two before you go to ensure you will not have an adverse reaction and good luck.Quanine is used for treating malaria.

Yeah you have to ask your doc but I took them once and I will never take them again unless I am going somewhere that has a the reoccuring kind and they have a bad out break because it ain't worth it. The kind you take once a day are an antibiotic so they are very unpleasent for girls and they give you a sensitivity to light which is what you want on a sun filled holiday. The Methliquine gives people weird dreams and can cause psychosis. I know lots of people who have survived malaria and I have never known anyone who got it in Costa Rica.
