he's a psychotic monkey. He's a clown. He has radio shows,tv programs,he's just trying to become a celebrity the only way he can, because he's talentless and unattractive. The guy has no idea what to do with all the power he has,all he knows is that he has to show the world he has it.
He is by far the worst president Venezuela has ever had.

People, please, I'm from Venezuela, and I can guarantee that Chavez is a F. crazy, he is destroying our country, corruption is worth than ever, he hates everything that has to eb wit USA, not only Bush, because in 2 more years they are going to be another elections at the USA, and some new president also, not Bush again, and he will hate him as well because he is under the advices of Fidel Castro at Cuba. He is changing the venezuelan constitution, again, to make an permanent place for the president, he is a DICTATOR, our countr is in ruins, crime is higher than ever, we have to ask permission from the goverment to get any foreign currencies (dollars). Log on to veneconomy.com.

The story is tell a lot difference outside Venezuela, if you think that he is doing well, so come for just a week, and don't make the regular tourist rides, come and see the true. I, as a Venezuelan, belive that USA have to do something about this, because is going to affect them sooner than they think. Part of the haigh oil prices is Chavez fault. This is real horrible, I cannot live like this

I agree completely with danmm3. Hugo Chavez is destroyiing the country. He will take away their freedom and it will be like Cuba before long. The people will all be poor and starving. I have ex relatives there and I lived there for a period of time. I adore the country and the people and I really hate what he is doing. All we can hope is that he'll be gone one day.

He has ruined the country and placed all his bets on high oil prices and consolidation of control.

He attempted a coup in 1992. He was pardoned by his godfather in 1997.

Venezuela is much worse off today during the last oil boom of the late '70s when only 15% was in poverty. Unemployment is worse, crime is worse, corruption is worse. He took over when oil was $10 a barrel. a monkey could have run the country with $60 a barrel.

He will stay in power until oil goes below $45 a barrel and the social discontent reaches a peak.

I just don't know what to believe anymore.

I lived in Caracas in 2001-2002. I was there, in april, when people got killed...
I made a lot of friends in Venezuela. Both rich people and poor people. Some of them supported Chavez, but most of them hated him. They told me why he was bad and what he was doing wrong. I read the newspapers, watched the television, went to las marchas contra Chavez...

When I got back to Europe, nobody understood why I didn't like Chavez. Over here, at that time, the newspapers were saying Chavez did really good things for the people, like education and doctors. They liked his socialist ideas, but didn't see the reality as I'd seen it when living in Venezuela.
I saw some documentaries about Chavez too. The first one, called "This revolution will not be televised", was about a conspiracy theorie saying that the April Revolution was all a set-up, planned by the CIA, to get rid of Chavez.
The second one showed first the schools and hospitals and supermarkets founded by Chavez and a lot of people that really liked him, and then the opposition and all the problems there are in Venezuela.
I liked the second one, because it let the viewer draw his own conclusions. People should always be able to speak their minds, without judging, or screaming that everything's wrong.

The answer is probably in the middle. As always. Nobody's completely wrong, or completely right.
I'm sure Chavez did some good things, but a lot more bad things... I think as for now, he's just thinking about his own profit and his "socialist revolution".
Actually, I never liked Chavez. He's a military man, not a politician. He screams a lot, but doesn't say anything meaningfull. And what he's doing now is really dangerous. Those decisions he made to give himself more power are totally wrong. It looks like he's becoming a real dictator.

I want my friends to be able to enjoy their beautiful country again... Because things are really bad, as they are now, and people are unhappy.
I agree with Danimm3 saying that Venezuela is worse now because of Chavez, but I don't think it's up to the USA to solve the problem. People of Venezuela should fight for their rights, be true and organize a firm opposition, even though it seems too hard sometimes...
The thing is.... It's too easy to just scream that Chavez is horrible and you want him out. The only way to make a better Venezuela is to offer a good alternative, to give people something to believe in again... That's what the opposition should do. Try to beat him in a legal and democratic way.
I hope they can manage to do so.

Chavez is a Dictator.

I visited a friend in Venezuela a couple of years ago when he was doing his elections (may/june 2004).
It was crazy. Everyone i met hates the man and from what i saw i can understand.
He got rid of everyone who opposed him in any way in government and the oil, etc (including my friends father).
He would go on tv every day or two for the 3 weeks i was there and talk about nothing (one time he talked for like an hour about his daughter i believe and her turtle). If any station does not broadcast his feed he closes them down.
He changes the constitution so he can stay in power longer.
Someone said he cares more about the poor, that is only half truth. He buses them in for his speeches and elections and feeds them if they vote for him.

Chavez is a disgrace.

The guy is a madman. He cares no more about the poor people in Venezuela than is needed to keep them from hanging him. He has already destroyed the oil industry. Oil production is about 75% of what it was before his seizures began. If not for his dumb luck of having had oil prices increase, he would have already thrown the country into squalor.

His efforts to nationalize everything under the moon is his feeble attempt to scare the oil markets into raising prices. He knows that if oil prices tank so will the oil economy of Venezuela. All those people expecting goodies from papa Hugo will be searching for a rope and a sturdy tree. That's when we will really need to be afraid of Hugo, when he is cornered like the dog that he is.

Funny how the people defending this clown are likely the same people who are all giddy about protesting and such. They would be wise to take their protests to Bush's White House rather than Hugo's in Caracas. How many protestors did Hugo kill a few years ago outside his a few years ago, nine?

I am from Trinidad & Tobago, just next to Venezuela, and my experience in Venezuela was awful! Nothing works, not the cars, not the ppl who in public services...as for Chavez, if you support him and wear red, things seem easier...but he seems to be a bit egotistical as there was an abnormal amount of footage of him on tv when I was visiting. It is a beautiful country and it is a bleeding shame what that man is doing. Venezuelan friends of mine from there who are rich hate him and the ones who are poor idolize him. I think that an ideal leader would be someone who is loved by almost everyone. Ultimately, most countries are plagued by fraudulent government, especially countries rich in natural resources, like Venezuela!!

Ivonne R
i agree with everyone again ts Chavez. I'm too a Venezuelan he has torn our cities, people, and economy to trash . The other day i was seeing the news children of 11 years old was supporting him soon enough there Will be no more Venezuela unless someone does something. God i wonder why in the world did they ever elect him??? Why did they do this to us?? i can't even go back to my own country and it has been some 7 years, without seeing ONE of my family.

Despite the anti-Chavez spin that the American media like to put forward, he seems to have made some positive changes for the ordinary people in Venezuela.
