19 year old white boy thinking of moving to Mexico?

Well I'm thinking of moving to Mexico for adventure/make a new life. Probably Rocky Point since its pretty much an american tourist spot, a lot of americans/white people go there.

I'd learn spanish obviously. Can I make a good living? Go to school? Pick up on chicks? Etc etc. Are the laws harsher?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to live in Mexico. However, working for wages is very meager compared to what you would expect in the US. There are some foreign residents who do nicely in Mexico, but usually they own a business, not work for wages. And, they usually are bringing a nice nest-egg with them, so they pay cash for their home, and have a lifetime of possessions they don't have to buy.

As a 19 year old, you probably will have none of these assets going for you, unless you have a trust fund providing regular and substantial income. Making a "good living" will probably be difficult at your age.

And, as noted, if you want to work or operate a business, you need a visa (FM-2 or FM-3) endorsed for that purpose. To even get a FM-2 without the commercial endorsement, you must prove your financial stability and source of income.

Foreigners are welcomed, but you can't come in and take the jobs away from Mexican citizens.

You should be fluent in Spanish before moving under the circumstances you describe. Attending university in Mexico won't be easy until you are fluent, and there isn't a university within a day's drive of Rocky Point.

Mexico is not a good place to break the law if that is what you mean by "harsher" laws. All other laws are not necessarily harsher, but they have differences that can seem arcane and annoying to foreigners who have not been raised under them.

If you are serious a out living in Mexico, I would explore educational opportunities in concert with a US university. Or investigate volunteer possibilities where you can do work for a non-profit NGA or religious institution. These ventures will not take you to resort areas like Rocky Point.

There are ways to move to Mexico... but perhaps not in the manner you now envision.

Big concern would be getting a work visa...very difficult. Jobs pay 1/10 th what they pay in thr U.S. It is very difficult for a young person to make a living in Mexico.

I recommend you go for it and don't look back. It will be something you will never regret. As a matter a fact, living here in Mexico will make you a better person.

Just keep in mind that at first you might struggle a lil'bit, but soon after you'll be on your feet. Depending on your education you might want to work for a world class resort something like a marketing rep., real estate sales person etc.

I live in La Paz, Mexico and there are many americans and canadians happily living here. There is even a French community. If you decide to move and might have questions/doubts on certain things feel free to email me--I might have the answer.

Why would you want to do this? I've spent over a year in Mexico and loved it, but I did NOT
1) go to some American spot
2) go to a tourist spot
3) spend a lot of time with white people and Americans

And why "obviously" will you learn Spanish? Given your stated priorities, you'll never learn more than a few words of Spanish. You've only given thought to how you could find a life there with white people and Americans; it's clear you're not the least bit prepared to actually learn the language or adapt to the culture.

And pick up chicks? How will you do this in a country with incomes about 1/6 or 1/10 of the US? Why will women, Mexican or foreign, want to go with you, a person monolingual in English making very little money, when they could go with some successful visitor.

Of course, we all can learn, so maybe this is just your plan of the moment and, once you go to Mexico, you'll realize that you don't have to limit yourself to ex-pat areas and culture. But I rather doubt it. All across Mexico and Central America there are foreigners (mostly American, Canadian, and European) who live in little enclaves and pretend that they're "living in the real Mexico". Cabo, San Miguel, Cancun, Antigua are some famous examples. They speak atrocious Spanish but like to think they're almost fluent. They hang out with other foreigners but like to claim they're living like Mexicans.

I find Mexico a fascinating place, but I did NOT hang out with Americans or other foreigners, and I read novels in Spanish and made friends in Spanish, and loved it. Stay in America please. Do yourself and Mexico a big big big favor.

depends..if you go and hang with low class, then you will have to "earn a place" just like a ghetto thing.
If you move into middle class, probably wont have a problem, since there are lots of whiite people aswell, and people is really nice..
If you do it with middle-high class, you ll be ok, but you ll need some money specially to show off, they live for that...

if you want to hang out with high class...well......unless you REALLLY have a lots of money, you wont make it they dont show off they just have it and do it...

You could get a job, but to do so you need a working visa. Unless you go to cancun or a touristic place and work out of law, no social security service, if they dont pay you you are screwed, blah blah....

School.......well education in Mexico is extremely expensive!!....there isnt a lot of public education so.........there you go..... besides to get in you need a legal status...

good luck!

Well, first we are not as racist as americans, yet some low-class and closed minded people would feel "invaded" so just avoid that kind of people
Besides its not like there are no white people in Mexico. There are, and many. Is just the stereotype of a mexican is not like that.
Umm so where exactly you want to go? do you know anyone who can help you out until you settle down?
What would yo do for a living?
Its true the salary is miserable but the life cost is low enough to make you have a decent middle class life.
What do you want to study? You can contact your current college and ask to get enrolled in a Spanish course at a mexican university. That would help you to learn the language and know how the life is there.
If you feel comfortable with it then you can start considering moving there.
Im 23, i came to Norway 7 months ago for adventure and make a new life too, and i do like it, but i wish i could have had a previous experience in the country.
And about the laws, you arent planning on breaking them, are you?
If u need some advice or something just email me.

Hola. This becomes the dream of many people after they have come back from a vacation in Mexico. Reality is, it is a very hard place to earn a decent living. Schools are in spanish, so you would need that language skill as well. Pick up chicks? Well thats easy...the tourist girls are always looking for a good time, the mexican girls are a whole different breed. More modest. Most are looking for husband material or someone to bring home to family. Are the laws harsher. Lets just put it this way -- if you are looking to do illegal things then you really have think about how absolutely horrible the jails are here. That will keep you on the straight and narrow. Drug offences are extremely serious, weapons, etc. bad very bad.

Want an adventure? Go for it. You only live once. You really won't get much out of it unless you learn Spanish. As far as piching up women, you'll have about as much luck as back home. Harsher laws? Not really. Stay away from Guns and Drugs, and by all means don't rape, robbery, etc. You'll find very little tolerance for serious crimes, but you'll find they will let little things slide pretty easily. If you want to work legally, you need an FM2 or FM3, though the dirty little secret no one ever wants to mention is that there are plenty of americans that go to Mexico on tourist permits and end up working or overstaying. Still I have never seen any "Minute Men" on the border 'stopping the invasion.' About the only way you will make decent money is to provide some type of goods or service to the foreign tourists. Good luck.

Yep, a white boy like you may be raped or something worse, if you are not picking up "chicks" where you are now then you don't have any better chances in Mexico

nooo.
personal experience.
mexico is a good place to visit but not to live...for a mexican yes, but if ur white then...there might be complications....think about it. the laws are not harsher because they let white pple go to mexico legally but the u.s does not allow mexicans to go their legally...and school there is tough alright kids are mean.
