2 or 3 more mexican cities to explore?

I am Canadian (age 50) and already visited all U.S.A., some Europe and Puerto Rico, Dom. Rep, South-East Asia.
Indeed, I never visited Mexico. I want to explore something new. I love the cities, the parks and the nature.
I got cheap airplane tickets inside Mexico if I reserve now.

In a-10 day trip, I will visit at least 5 cities. I already selectionned Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Which cities could be different of the others above that I should visit in priority?

Monterrey, Merida, Chetumal, Tuxla Gutierrez, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Cancun, Acapulco.

That would be a quick exploration (2 days in each locations). In future travels, I will explore the regions that I feel that should be explored a lot more. I might rent some cars as needed (cheap there!) in most locations.

Hello!

I am also a Canadian, 24 years old who has extensively traveled through-out Mexico.

Your first two choices are great: Mexico City, Guadalajara- I would skip Puerto Vallarta off the menu due to it's location and if you decide to go to the Yucatan (which is the best) you are in better proximity to Cancun (if you decide to go), but if you do go to Cancun make sure you stay in the Hotel Zone in a nice place or you won't get to see the most of the city.

I would NOT recommend Cancun as it's only a beautiful place if you stay in the resort. You can't even see the beach from the main roads as they are all blocked off from high rise resorts and hotels.

But since you are going to the yucatan, I would recommend MERIDA where you should stay- explore Merida for a day, which is an amazing city with a lot to see- the next day explore Chichen Itza (about one hour from Merida) and the area which is very accessible by an organization tour that lasts an entire day or even by renting a car.

From Merida I would rec'd bypassing Cancun and heading towards Tulum or Playa del Carmen.

Chetumal is a small town and there is nothing much to see there, unless you decide to go to Belize!

Veracruz and Villehermosa are also beautiful places, and Tuxtla Gutierrez is an ABSOLUTE MUST (make sure you see the Sumidero Canyon!)

So that being said, bottom line if you were to pick 3 more cities:

1) Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas (and Sumidero Canyon)
2) Merida, Yucatan (and Chichen Itza, plus a lot of Cenotes!)
3) Veracruz or Tulum, your choice and both beautiful, but depending on how you are getting around it may be complicated, and tiring!

Cancun is a must. Absolutely beautiful. I don't know how much there is to see in Monterrey. I had a friend who lived there and didn't like it but I think that was more for personal reasons. In any event, I ENVY you!

Wow you Canadians must be rich seeing all the places and most of the US that we Americans havent even seen.I know one lady from there that has been to Hawaii 5 times. Me >>none lol

Your question: I live in Illinois and have visited just the border towns of Mexico. Your dollar might be worth more farther down in Mexico where there are 10 million competeing for it but along the border are just tourist traps things costing more there then what it cost in the US.

Have a nice vacation my friend. I have been to Canada just once so far to Edmonton and it was lovely!!

go to Tulum, its south of Cancun and less crowded and more like a real town, Cancun can be kind of turisty.
